Description

That, in a nutshell, is Enron (the play): the basics of the scandal, what led up to it and the major players involved. But the pulse and vigour of play and production stem from their ability to make complex financial ideas manifest.

Equal parts low comedy and high tragedy, this fast moving play will hold your attention like a gruesome train wreck. It was definitely a unique way of telling a real live event and it definitely got the point across about how this company ended up where it ended up. What needs stressing equally strongly is that it is also hugely entertaining—and accessible even to dunderheads like me who wouldn’t know a financial instrument from an instrument of torture, though they currently seem to be much the same thing…She also knows how to construct a play, moving from savage black comedy to something approaching, classical tragedy as Jeffrey Skilling, the company’s ruthless and brilliant CEO who was sentenced to twenty-four years in jail on fraud and conspiracy charges, reaps what his own hubris has sown.

But no serious play on Broadway can survive a withering attack from The New York Times, which carries the force of a papal indictment".

The entire ENRON case - where the company committed one of the largest cases of financial fraud in history by misrepresenting earnings to improve their performance, modifying balance sheets and a little light laundering - is so bombastic, so ridiculous that it's hard to believe it really happened. Though it happened in my lifetime, I knew next to nothing about the Enron scandal before reading this play. He also stated its failure to earn nominations at the Tony Awards in major categories was its "kiss of death".The most entertaining parts is when Skilling gets fat on twinkies and when there is a fight between the Traders and Fastow. EAT THE RICH, SELFISH W*NKERS, TOO CAUGHT UP IN THEIR TESTOSTERONE FUELED LIES TO NOTICE THE REAL LIVES IMPACTED. i will definitely be reading again - mostly because i ahve to, the play won't revise itself - but i am sure i will emjoy it a second time. In Enron, one of the most infamous scandals in finanacial history is transformed into a theatrical epic. The only difference between me and the people judging me is they weren't smart enough to do what we did.
