About this deal

Iphigenia at Aulis, the first part of The Greeks trilogy, adapted and directed by John Barton for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1980. These close identifications of Iphigenia with Artemis encourage some scholars to believe that she was originally a hunting goddess, whose cult was subsumed by the Olympian Artemis.

People say that locals who happened to be around at the time couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a huge black bird carrying a human skeleton on its back. The scene is in front of Agamemnon’s tent at the port of Aulis, where the Greeks are waiting to sail. He watches a May Day parade and ruminates about how through the ages tyranny has demanded the sacrifice of love and sexuality, and deformed ordinary life. Here, Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks, hunts and then kills a deer in a grove sacred to the goddess Artemis.

Agamemnons datter ble smuglet inn noen sider om gangen til Frankrike på midten av 80-tallet, mens Etterfølgeren er skrevet nesten tyve år senere. Albanian novelist Kadare (The Concert), living in political exile in France since 1991, spins cogent tales about the temptations and evils of totalitarian bureaucracy. The Killing of a Sacred Deer, 2017 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, while not a straight adaptation, takes inspiration from the legend. It is grimly cynical - but then if you'ld lived under Albanian communism (supposedly the 'purest' in history), you'd be too.

Everything is of relevance in a political context and as it relates to the protagonist’s sense of well-being, but there are no other personalities and little real drama. One after the other the surgeon's children are plagued with paralysis (a direct allusion to Agamemnon's immobile armies) and the surgeon's family is forced to sacrifice one of its members to atone for the accidental surgical killing. In 1843, botanist Kunth published Iphigenia, which is a plant genus in the family Colchicaceae and it was named after Iphigenia. Nothing is ever as it seems – the powers that be always more Machiavellian than one thought possible. If you can manage to make yourself see the rough weather of dictatorship as a “dead storm”, you’ll have the key to the enigma. In Aulis, the goddess Artemis prevents the fleet from sailing and Agamemnon is faced with a terrible decision: he has to sacrifice either his daughter Iphigeneia or the purpose of his expedition. Nevertheless, one of the main reasons for the murder of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra is his sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia, the story of which is told by Euripides in his tragedies Iphigenia in Aulis and Iphigenia in Tauris. Iphigeneia then changes her mind and her heart and decides that the best thing to do is to go willingly to her sacrifice, for the sake of the Greek army and the honor of Greek women.
