This beautiful book is a REAL children's book (as opposed to a book, that adults think children should like!In “Babar the King” (1933)—the central book in the Babar saga—the rhinos and the elephants have been at war, but the point isn’t that the rhinos are evil. Jean de Brunhoff (1899-1937) is considered to be one of the greatest picture book authors in history. Even the elephants, for all their learning and sailor suits, can be turned into slaves through a bad twist of fate. Laurent de Brunhoff, who was twelve when his father died, at the age of just thirty-seven, picked up the elephant brush after the Second World War and has gone on producing Babar books, with the same panache, almost to this day. A neatly printed vintage Christmas 1982 gift inscription at the upper left corner of the half title page.

First, Babar's mother is killed by a hunter, but at the end of the book when Babar sets up his perfect elephant society, the idea that a human can come in a shoot a citizen is never addressed. After his mother is killed by a hunter, Babar escapes to the city, where he meets The Old Lady and becomes educated living among men.
