About this deal

This story has a hopeful ending though as eventually the sisters make it to Israel after the war and start a new life there. I also wished that Morris had found a way to give us more details about the formation of the new country. Heather Morris is an absolute legend bringing these stories to life and out into the world and she’s an author that has fast become one of my favourites. Slovakian sisters Cibi, Livia and Magda make a solemn promise to their dying father to always stay together and to take care of each other. I absolutely adored Heather's two previous novels - The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey - so I was more than excited to see she'd written another book.

These stories must continue to be handed down and talked about through future generations so that a Holocaust can never happen again. In the end, taking their fate into their own hands guaranteed the sisters’ survival, through a combination of luck, goodwill from surprising sources, resourcefulness, and a belief in strength and hope. It is painful, however, to think of all the children and grandchildren who were never born because so many did not survive.Ema described to me the depravity that went on in that place and about life beyond the dividing electrical fence. As with this author's previous books, nothing is straightforward forward and to try to explain the story. She shares how their lives changed once living in Israel and included notes in the form of "Afterward" with family members. A vitally important book to never forget, and a reminder of the depth of human hope, love, and the will to survive.

They must find a way to endure the nightmare, the horrifying conditions, the sickness, watching others being forced to walk to their death. As we read of Cibi and her sisters, we need to keep in mind all the stories that will not be told, and that the people behind them are just as real as those whose names we know. What gave them the incentive, the courage to have hope, to believe that there was reason for hope even when the circumstances offered them no obvious reasons to continue to believe - in this case, it was the promise they made to their father.

I love giving out 5 stars to most books I read so it really pains me to give a book 1 star… but this book just wasn’t for me. It is interesting that this book doesn't just end with the sister's release from Auschwitz like most other WWII memoirs but carries on and explains how the sisters slowly heal and move on with the rest of their lives. In Fritz After Dark, which collects the graphic novels Luba: Three Daughters, High Soft Lisp, and more, the children are growing up and lovers have come and gone (and come and gone again). Getting to know the characters and understanding their lives and what drives them to do the things they do becomes a story. I have recently read another book about Auschwitz and I am not mentally ready to read another one so soon.Decidedly a beach book, this is a so-so book to read (you might like it more than I did) … take it to the beach. The oldest and youngest were deported to a Nazi concentration camp while the middle sister was hidden away in a local hospital.
