About this deal

The charity Will Aid has set up a partnership between certain solicitors and nine well-known charities. In this short piece, the legendary Simone del Beauvoir documents the short period of her mother's hospitalisation following a fall, the subsequent discovery of her having cancer, and how she and her sister, Poupette, dealt with their mother's slow wasting away.

It’s a reflection on all the horrors of bodily illness, and the extremities of grief, even after — maybe especially after — de Beauvoir and her mother had experienced such a strain within their relationship, caused by her mother’s Catholic opposition to her atheism. De Beauvoir describes the conflicting feelings that she has for example - wanting her mother to stay alive and also wanting her to have a peaceful end. An ex-boyfriend of mine used to say that the first time he lost bowel control, he’d drive to the Grand Canyon and jump off. De Beauvoir takes turns with her sister, and other family members, to sit with her mother in the six weeks between hospital admission and death.

In her final message to the public, Maynard wrote, “The world is a beautiful place, travel has been my greatest teacher, my close friends and folks are the greatest givers.

The prescriptions require a psychological evaluation, sign-off from two different physicians, and a 15-day waiting period before they’re available.

She also ruminates on womanhood more generally, not all that surprisingly, and seeing her mother more wholly and compassionately than ever: “Cut off from the pleasures of the body, deprived of the satisfactions of vanity, tied down to wearisome tasks that bored and humiliated her, this proud and obstinate woman did not possess the gift of resignation. Nowhere is de Beauvoir’s rigorous honesty more visible than in this hau Before making a decision on who to use, it's always advisable to check with a few local solicitors to find out how much they charge. When probate is granted, the will is kept by the Probate Service and any member of the public can get a copy.
