Now, Comey has moved into writing fiction and hoped to make a splash, ending up on the New York Times bestseller list and away from a place above the fold. I thought this was a very fast-paced, easily readable and unputdownable debut crime thriller from former FBI director James Comey. Nora works to find the real killer of the disgraced former governor, apparently a mob hit, even as the evidence points to the wife. The two trials - Nora's and the one against Kyra - play off each other as the investigations (and trial witnesses) begin to reveal in-common details.

The newly divorced Kyra Burke stands accused of murdering her ex-husband, former (disgraced) governor of New York, Tony Burke. Sorry about the italics, but the overuse of that word (along with "poignant", for instance) kind of drive me crazy. The author makes excellent use of his extensive experience with the FBI and as a federal prosecutor. It's about a murder investigation that reveals deadly connections between high-ranking politicians and the mafia.Comey leans heavily on his long career in various areas of law enforcement to educate the reader as he entertains us: the difference between the District Attorney and the United States Attorney; the different courts and procedures that exist for different reasons; where the FBI fit into the bigger picture and how they co-exist with other organisations such as the NYPD and the USA’s office. Statements from Trump and the White House suggested that he had been dismissed to ease the "pressure" Trump was under due to the Russia investigation.

James Comey’s knowledge of the friction between state and federal agencies provides grist for the collision of two made-in-tabloid-heaven cases. Strong characters, some of whom with great roots that could develop into a strong series, emerge throughout the book, leaving the reader begging to know more. S. attorney’s office in Manhattan separately pursue a lead indicating that the murder was (for some unexplained reason) a mob hit.A Yonkers, New York native, Jim Comey attended the College of William and Mary and the University of Chicago Law School. It won’t be long before they discover that it’s related to their own investigations, and is about to put even more strain on their already-fraught relationship with the New York District Attorney’s office. I loved the organized crime aspect, the feds against the locals, the loyalty of the mobsters to each other.
