Update March 2022: Atlas of Imagined Places has won the Edward Stanford Prize for Best Illustrated Travel Book, 2022. Combining pop culture with map enthusiasm, 'The Atlas of Imagined Places: from Liliput to Gotham City' is published by Pavilion Books and written by Matt Brown and Rhys B.

The atlas is sumptuously illustrated by Mike Hall, whose glorious maps and illustrations of London have long beguiled us. Or that two major characters from Doctor Who and Star Trek lived in the same small part of San Francisco?Nevertheless, this fascinating book is essential for any map enthusiast or devotee of popular culture. For example, in Wales, we find Cackle’s Academy, a mountaintop school featured in Jill Murphy ’s The Worst Witch series and disguised to non-magic folk as the ruined Castle Overblow, whilst a few mountaintops away is a rival school of magic operated by Miss Pentangle, and this is only a short flight on a broomstick from Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children on Cairnholme Island. So awash in magical schools is this tiny portion of the world that at least a few other mythical educational institutions also reported in the area seem to “have disapparated from the map through a lack of space. The full design for the map of the United States, which is divided into three sections (east, central and west) for the book. Detail from the map of Eastern Europe, including a large section of European Russia and the Baltics.

Locations from film, tv, literature, myths, comics and video games are plotted in a series of beautiful vintage-looking maps. The real joy, though, is simply to browse the maps and make your own connections between very different works of fiction. Matt Brown is author of several books for Batsford, using his trademark humour and playfulness as tools to explore the world.

The book comes with a full guide to the many sources, with notes on how the locations were sleuthed. Fascinating and beautiful, this is an essential book for any popular culture fan and map enthusiast. Sometimes these are easy to work out but other times a bit of detective work is needed and the authors have been those detectives. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. The book includes 5,000 locations - everywhere from Bedrock to Erinsborough, Vice City to Wakanda - drawn from varied works of fiction, but plotted alongside one another like some madcap alternative reality.

These were then developed by me into more detailed, stylised maps, which were then sent back to Matt who placed all of the text labels and pins. The 14 cities covered are Berlin, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York City, Paris, Rio, San Francisco, Sydney, Tokyo, Venice and Washington DC.With a deep love of trivia, he’s written and hosted hundreds of quizzes, including events for the Museum of London and Manchester Science Museum, among many others. The unusual distorted projection of this map was created by adapting a segment of an azimuthal map centred on the North Pole; this allowed me to fit in the entirety of Canada, Greenland and the Arctic comfortably across the full width of the double page spread.
