Burr based sharpening is more common and produced better results from the testing I've personally done so far. But on the bright side, you can sharpen your blades without the mess of water stones, and they're gentle enough that you're not likely to remove too much metal by accident. However, if you like to put a mirror finish on your cutting tools, you’ll want to move to a finer grit stone such as a 6000- or 8000-grit diamond stone. I used to sharpen on diamond plated stones which wear out after some use, but this CBN is bonded so it will last forever.

I use the KME Self Aligning Broadhead Sharpener, and the benchstone offers a large and very flat surface that handles wide cutting surfaces (much better than using sand paper with backing). I don't have access to Cliff Stamp to discuss my findings when I used his plateau method for the 10 trials I did. The cbn stone is also very thin which also threw me for a loop bcuz I'm used to thicker stones personally. So far I have been recommended the Venev stones but it seems like these stones will be next to impossible to get for the time being. Most important is that CBN is harder and has greater abrasion, thermal and chemical resistance than either synthetic diamonds (though less so than natural diamonds), silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide. That appears to be a rather bold statement, are you directing this statement at anyone in particular?

Once your edge has all the damage removed and the actual apex is no longer visibly reflecting light -- then you know that you have gotten the apex thin enough to apply a micro-bevel at apex. That is interesting but perhaps you could share more information and someone aside from Cliff may have some insight? This is where the fixed abrasives are a god-send as you can trivially bring knives to very high sharpness with even coarse plates such as the Spyderco CBN assuming you use 1- lubricant, 2 - light pressure, - edge forward strokes at slightly higher angle to grind a micro bevel, 3 - alternating strokes from one side to other/ crossing scratch patterns. And if I only plan on sharpening to 800 + stropping, I would certainly appreciate the better ascetics of the edge. At 3″ x 8″ the 306CBN is big enough to handle the largest plane blades and it easily accommodates a honing guide. You can run them under water or put them in water to do the flattening if you wish, but dry them off really well when you're finished. For sure, with the resin bonded Venevs, you'll need a flattening kit such as a piece of glass and some SiC powder in a lower grit than your stones.

Btw, don't be afraid of the burr, if someone is, then he knows little to nothing about FH sharpening.Super Schleifmedien, mit agressivem “Biss”… mit ÖL und Wasser verwendbar, Abstufungen 100, 200, 400, 800, 1200 passen prima zusammen. Spyderco's new 3x8 benchstone combines the many advantages of CBN with a classic flatstone format to supercharge traditional sharpening technique. It never requires flattening (though in all fairness neither do diamond stones) and it will sharpen any tool steel, including the S90V produced by Crucible. Steels I've tested were H1, vg10, s45vn, and I think aus 10 with 13dps microbevels on a 1k super vitrified diamond stone. Multipurpose - The broad, perfectly flat carbon steel embryo is coated with fast-cutting 400-mesh CBN on one side and finer 800-mesh CBN on the other.
