About this deal

As she starts to make friends with the other animals in the house, the mice and the spiders, Ellie starts to learn how to be a good friend. This short tale was first published in a different format as “Elaine, You’re a Brat” but this new incarnation under publisher Barrington Stoke’s “super readable” label and with their trademark dyslexia-friendly layout and typeface and Matt Robertson’s brilliantly lively and humorous illustrations is fully justified and should prove to be an enjoyable read for children of 8+ who prefer short chapter books.

When she’s turned into a cat, we get to see Ellie for who she really is behind the sadness of missing her dad, while she’s given the chance to make some unusual new friends and ultimately find a place to belong. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Ellie the Cat is no ordinary novel about a cat, it’s about friendship and understanding and had a nice twist in the tale. The inter-generational relationship between Ellie and her Grandma develops into something quite heart-warming too. I remember reviewing her earlier novel, Robot Girl knowing that Malorie would keep up creating the magic of her storytelling for all, whether it’s sci fi, fantasy, or the modern era.

Ellie and the Cat is a fun, middle grade story perfect for children just starting to read chapter books. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books.Inspired by traditional Middle Eastern tales, this captivating adventure is full of magic, mystery and danger. Ellie doesn't want to as its just another move she can do without bit her mother insists as her father is going away to another job and she can’t look after her. Her work has appeared on screen, with Pig-Heart Boy, which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, being adapted into a BAFTA-award-winning TV serial.

Although Jackie looks after Gran's tatty old donkey, Barnaby, she longs to have her own horse like the local boys. In a dyslexia-friendly format, this is a magical and gently comic tale of friendship and thinking of others. The result of this constant upheaval is Ellie can’t make friends, isolating her and makes her sad, lonely and depressed. Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned.Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. Ellie discovers that she has switched bodies with Jolly the cat and has only one day to find Grandma’s lost ring otherwise she will remain a cat forever.
