The Author knew how to bring about the topic, express himself, give helpful insight into discovering our family history, and used good examples. Over all a good book, but (disclosure: I am NOT an expert) from my perspective this book was very "black and white" - very rigid. I understand myself because I alone have lived and experienced my history; because I know myself, I know who I am, what I feel, what I do and why I do it. These “invisible loyalties” as coined by Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy, one of the founding fathers of family therapy, are characteristics and behaviors that are unconsciously passed down through generations.

It's even written in the style of a self help book so not only is it informative, but practical as well (in terms of understanding yourself and your own family). Now, not to get anyone’s panties in a twist here, but I was left with such ambivalent feelings, (even after knowing deep down that Marianne and Connell are soul mates, and absolutely will end up back together and growing old with kiddies) about her brother and mother.
