About this deal

In March 2002, Hear'Say cancelled their planned arena tour to allow Shentall time to "settle in" to the group. Pure and Simple" was released on 12 March 2001 in the United Kingdom and received a continental European release in April 2001. It was a cover of the original version recorded three years earlier by English-Dutch girl group Girl Thing, who were dropped from BMG before the song was given to Hear'Say.

Take Me Home Country Roads" is set in West Virginia, but John Denver had never been there when he recorded the song. Following the disappointing sales of the single, it was thought that they would be dropped by the label, though no official word came from Polydor. During the summer of 2002, the group toured the UK radio roadshows circuit, where they were constantly booed and abused by members of the public, with a performance in Brighton being cut short due to the animosity concerned – evidence of the degree of public animosity that had built up. The song and band were also criticised by several contemporary musical acts at the time, including Stereophonics, David Gray, and Blur. By the time Hear'Say split up in 2002, the song had been certified double platinum for sales of over 1.Johnny Shentall, husband of Steps singer Lisa Scott-Lee, won the auditions, joining the group on 5 February 2002. Great vocals and a wicked beat make this one of the most promising debut singles from a "pop group" in a long, long time! It took her only 30 minutes to pen this and she discussed her songwriting with the Metro newspaper March 31, 2006: "I quit the industry and eventually got back into it when I was asked to work on Simon Cowell's girl group, Girl Thing. Lovin' Is Easy", the group's only single to be released with Shentall, failed to make a commercial impact. The group, who were signed to Polydor Records, originally consisted of Danny Foster, Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan.

A representative for Hear'Say denied the reports, stating: "Everybody who is involved with Hear'Say will be sitting down this week to discuss the future. This was the debut single for the band put together in the first ITV Popstars series on British TV, which they won after over 2,000 hopefuls had been auditioned. Girl Thing then found out, after the song was written, that their manager Chris Herbert (who also managed Hear'Say) had given the song to the newer band as their debut single, an act that upset Girl Thing. The song also topped the New Zealand Singles Chart for five weeks and reached number three in Ireland. The song was co-written by Pete Kirtley, Tim Hawes and Betty Boo (under her real name of Alison Clarkson); however, nearly 14 years after the song was released, Linzi Martin of the band Girl Thing made the assertion that she was responsible for the majority of the song's composition, having written the verses after Pete Kirtley (her then boyfriend) had brought the chorus of the track to her as a gift. The programme documented Hear'Say recording and promoting their first single with the series ending on the night the single charted in the UK Singles Chart. The chorus has a fantastic hookline, and the melody is exactly as it says, pure and simple, which is why this song works. The song was released on 12 March 2001 as the lead single from Hear'Say's debut studio album, Popstars (2001). After the band's break-up, all members went on to achieve individual success elsewhere in the entertainment industry.

This was co-written by Alison Clarkson, who previously had solo success with songs such as " Doin' The Do" under the name of Betty Boo. The song was also a number-one hit in New Zealand, where it topped the RIANZ Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks in July and August 2001, earning a gold certification for selling over 25,000 copies. In November 2001, just nine months after the release of their debut album, Hear'Say released Everybody. The judges reduced the contestants to a group of ten, before visiting each of them at their homes to reveal whether or not they had been selected for the group. With the release of their debut album Popstars, Hear'Say became the first act in UK chart history to simultaneously top the UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart with their debut releases. It sold 160,000 copies during its first day on sale and 549,823 copies during its first week, becoming the fastest-selling debut single of all time in the UK, [1] [8] a record beaten a year later by Will Young, the winner of the first series of Pop Idol, with his debut single " Evergreen" / " Anything Is Possible".

Hear'Say achieved instant fame, breaking chart records with their debut single " Pure and Simple" and the album Popstars.

The five unsuccessful finalists went on to form the group Liberty (later renamed Liberty X after a legal dispute). Bridge over troubled water, a cover, but you only have to listen to this once to love it, and the third song - i can't stop thinking about it - a faster one.
