Regardless of the terrible reasoning of a 19 year old landlady using sexual favors as a means to pay back rent (although she often marks off parts of the debt for non intimate reasons too) I do like the chemistry between the landlady and Chiyo as they begin to do more together and fill the gaps they find lacking in their own lives as Chiyo discovers herself trying to be there more for the landlady as best she can.I know this will most likely never ever see the light of day for an anime adaptation, but a queer can dream! And hey, I have massive respect for a book that starts off about sex and isn’t super tawdry about it, but also doesn’t pull a huge fake-out later on like somebody being too tired or chickening out and it never actually happened.
