About this deal

While Frances tries to juggle her heritage, school, tennis, and the mysterious disappearance of Clara’s hair, she comes to better understand her sister in a sweet and unexpected twist and finds where she really belongs. I may not identify as trans, but I definitely wouldn't want parents to pick up this book thinking that the information contained therein won't harm people. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. There's nothing quite like the bond between a carer and their child, and these picture books beautifully explore that unconditional love. The book validates how challenging that experience is, talking the reader through the protagonist’s inner monologue as the protagonist tries to make sense of why someone would bully them about their loving family.

bullying, loneliness and being othered as a chinese-american are all chronicled in this novel told in verse. As the story unfolds, and each character's version of events undermines the other, all our assumptions about victimhood, agency, love and control are challenged - for we never know J's gender. Teachers could read this book aloud to teach theme, as it has very consistent repeated message throughout the story. I’m such a sucker for a book with an impactful ending, and Victoria Chang had just the right amount of sparkle in this one. Those are the two groups with which I'm the most familiar, but others listed were equally interesting and useful.Michael Genhart has been a clinical psychologist in private practice in San Francisco and Marin for 25 years.

Each poem feeds into the next to tell the story of Frances, her own struggles, and the empathy she has for her sister’s mysterious hair loss.Design the sequence of images, which appear on the left-hand page, with accompanying text on the right-hand page. Although she struggles to speak up, Frances’s powerful inner voice resonates in gorgeous imagery and evocative free verse. I really enjoyed doing it and liked that I was able to save it each time I added some more photos and text. Firstly, the parental phrase ‘That’s nice, love’, is far kindlier than the dismissive ‘Not Now, Bernard’. A first-person text presents several children, all wearing rainbow-heart T-shirts, grappling with others’ homophobia.

In a day and age when we tend to focus on our differences, Love is Love is here to remind us that the love of family is a shared value across cultures and family structures, and it gives our children the language they need explain that. The ending felt like that moment when you see the first flower underneath the melting snow after the melancholy chill of winter. The text is deceptively simple, with the first half starting with a young boy in a rainbow heart shirt, who tells a friend that he has a problem, because other kids were laughing at his shirt. The second page is a "Note To Parents, Teachers, And Other Caring Adults," and I really wish I'd had access to its messages when beginning my teaching career!
