The tales of production difficulties encountered by Tony Scott making the first movie echo charmingly second time around, but for very different reasons. For the week that ended on November 25th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Oppenheimer (2023) took the top spot on the both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts, with demand for the 4K UHD edition strong enough to cause retail sell outs. There’s a reason it’s now amoung the ranks of highest grossing movies ever, it brought a lot of joy to people during the pandemic and especially those 80s kids like me who grew up loving the original! With the effects of the pandemic on the filmmaking industry still looming we as film fans needed something to remind us why we love movies and the theatrical experience. If you don’t know anything about Oblivion – have managed to avoid the more revealing trailers and promotional material – then I strongly recommend you book yourself some tickets and go see it on the biggest screen you can find.

Indeed, if you strip away all of that classic, nostalgic fortification fans have cast upon the rightly beloved original over the last few decades, this is comfortably the better film, and even if it may take a little longer achieve that same untouchable classic status as its forebear (its staggering Box Office landmarks have arguably given it a head-start), it'll proudly sit alongside it as an organic continuation that - much like its star - defies the lengthy passage of time to provide a perfect companion-piece to the original. Paramount has widely released a UHD SteelBook packaging variant for the 2022 film 'Top Gun: Maverick.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. While working as a test pilot in Mohave, California, pushing the Navy’s experimental Darkstar scramjet to the edge of the envelope, Maverick learns that Rear Admiral Chester Cain (Ed Harris) has cancelled the program because it hasn’t yet achieved Mach 10—an obvious excuse to expropriate its funds for Cain’s preferred unmanned drones. Still, there's no denying this is one big SCRAM-jet of nostalgia-fuelled fan-service, which only Top Gun fans are really going to go ballistic for. Indeed, in many ways you can see Matthew McConaughey's pilot of the future from Interstellar as the long lost grandkid of this Maverick of the past, who is still always pushing the envelope and is still seemingly able to achieve what no other human - or AI for that matter - could.Sure, people can point at the charming knock-off Iron Eagle, or the earlier Final Countdown- which also had a whole lot of real F-14 aerial footage to play with - but, whether it's thanks to the Jerry Bruckheimer / Don Simpson / Tony Scott machine, or just a freak lightning-in-a-bottle moment, in the last thirty-six years we've had nothing like it. In my opinion, a good Atmos mix consists of a track that effectively utilizes the entire speaker array to replicate what is transpiring onscreen. engine roars are deep and potent, hitting for all it's worth without falling into unbalanced, wonky rumble.
