About this deal

I always wear breathable trail-running shoes and I'll only wear waterproof socks in them if it's cold and wet. The key is that Merino is a material with natural temperature balancing and moisture-wicking properties (Merino fibers can absorb up to one third of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch), and will keep your feet warm (or cool) and dry when you need it. Mine are a few years old and have lasted well, but probably largely because they only get a handful of uses each year (mainly at the Dark Mountains - notice a theme here?

If I need waterproof shoes, what's like the Trail Gloves (zero drop, minimal padding, no big, rigid heel cup) but waterproof? Like with most of the waterproof socks on this list, three-layer technology is employed here to ensure your feet stay dry.The size chart shows the suggested size for each of these socks, allowing you to pick the one your require. I've got my eye on these - not the cheapest things in the world but christmas is coming up and they could probably do dual-duty for snowy hikes.

Mine do tend to get a bit damp inside, when running, but I suspect that's probably due to my sweaty feet!My thoughts on Sealskinz are - they are great for use in Mulu (Borneo) at keeping leeches, mulu foot and in my case ants (to which I am horribly allergic) at bay. mm neoprene, NRS socks are generally watertight for a while, but after several uses the seams begin to leak. Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels.

I've done some very cold, wet, winter races, and none of my toes have fell off (yet), wearing nothing more than a standard pair of Inov8 or Bridgedale socks, perhaps a pair of merino Inov8 socks if it's exceptionally cold. I was waiting for the socks to arrive before replacing the shoes (Speedcross; I got fed up of their behaviour on wet stone), and I reckon they will make half a size difference. Backpacking Light community posts are moderated and here to foster helpful and positive discussions about lightweight backpacking.Yeah, Sealskinz were pretty much essential on the Dark Mountains and, for me, any long winter activities. Perfect to be used on their own for walking, running, etc or as a liner to give a heat boost underneath your sailing, cycling, motorbike, skiing and other socks/boots. The areas I hike have numerous daily stream crossings (for example, I crossed the same stream 21 times in one mile on the Black Forest Trail) where there's not always a log or a rock-hop to keep your feet out of the water. constant drizzle and very wet underfoot - soaked to the skin when finished - apart from my feet, which were completely dry in my new Dexshells. Gaiters absolutely essential in winter conditions, to stop snow getting in your boots - don't really wear them much otherwise, overtrousers perfectly adequate for rain/wet vegetation.
