I’ll admit, though, by the time the characters were killed off in Nine Lives, I was really only waiting to see what method was used. Before I began reading my Kindle version of Nine Lives, I took a picture of the cast list, with descriptions of the nine people on a very special list. The con was that the narrative bounces around a lot and ends up being just one person being murdered after the other.

One thing to note: if you haven't read And Then There Were None, this spoils it thoroughly, which would be a crying shame. The analysis and who sussed it out in advance of the conclusion (which I rarely do) is always a good time. When one of the people on the list is murdered quickly followed by another, it becomes clear to FBI Agent Jessica Winslow (whose name also features on the list) that the list is essentially a hit list - every one of those nine people is marked to be murdered. It’s about nine people who each receive an unremarkable envelope in the post containing a piece of paper bearing nine names, one of which is theirs. She frowned and pressed the sheet of paper flat onto the coffee table, telling herself that she'd show it to Jonathan. Although I went over it at the beginning of the book I really never had to refer to it again because I was able to keep track of the nine people.

As the mysterious sender stalks these nine strangers, they find themselves constantly looking over their shoulders, wondering who will be crossed off next….Rounding down since I wanted to DNF multiple times until around 70% when I thought I may as well finish it. Helpfully, one of the people is Jessica Winslow, an FBI agent who is quickly on the case hunting down the others on the list. And found myself referring back to them until the characters developed more and I could keep them all straight. Following on from Eight Perfect Murders we now have Nine Lives, nine names on a list sent to each one. I did find things slowed for me at the end, but I really enjoyed one final twist that I just did not see coming.

After skipping Swanson's last (for now) after some so-so reviews, I was thrilled to see such an enthusiastic reception for this book and was ready to jump back into Swanson's world.

It's one of the most beloved mysteries of all time for good reason, and lately so many books are either retelling it or taking inspiration from it. I will not spoil any of the mastery that Peter Swanson spins together here, but he does come up with a backstory that connects everything in such a way that your head will be spinning. I also was a bit bummed that Swanson didn't finish with his requisite ode in his author's note to whatever book inspired him. We don’t linger on melodrama nor do we feel a need to explain until it’s fully time for explanations.

Peter Swanson has an uncanny knack of writing very readable, absorbing and clever crime books, and Nine Lives, his latest is no different.

He opened the envelope, not expecting anything of note, and was surprised to find a short list of names, including his. I wouldn’t say I was particularly attached to any of the characters either, just because there got to be so many differing ones I didn’t feel like I got to care enough about each one of them individually.
