Description

Seeing as the motor is housed at the end of the pole behind the blade, a lot of the 3.6 kg weight is in front of your body. It’s top heavy and even when you take some of the strain with the shoulder strap, it takes a lot of goes to get comfortable. Due to this trimmer’s one-piece folding body and ultralight frame, I’ve reached for it more than the rest for any odd jobs around the garden. It’s a shame that the battery system doesn’t come with a charge level indicator though. It would be easier to tell how long as single charge would last. I’m confident that you could tidy up a reasonable sized garden without needing a recharge though. Ryobi are becoming increasingly well-known in the world of DIY, particularly for producing quality machines. The Ryobi OHT1845 18V ONE+ Cordless 45cm Hedge Trimmer is no exception. It has a 45 cm blade length and an 18 mm cutting gap which allows it to get through lighter hedges.

VonHaus has also included some handy safety features, which make it suitable for both novices and professionals. These include a plastic blade cover, a dead-man’s switch and a reliable shoulder strap. This helps you to keep the tool well balanced and maintain control when the machine is fully extended.

The included battery has an impressive run time of around 45 minutes, and after this time period your arms will certainly need a rest! It runs at about 96 dB, so although ear defenders are recommended, it’s not too loud that it’ll disturb your neighbours. Their GE-HH 18/45 Li T Solo is a hefty cordless hedge trimmer that generally works well but is let down by some odd design choices. If you know you’re going to have to charge the battery partway through the job, a shorter charging time will be useful. This trimmer is easy to extend and retract, without having to remove the shoulder strap. This means you can adjust the length in seconds, with the maximum length 2.6 m. You can also adjust the angle of the cutting head without removing the strap, and this can be adjusted in a 135° arc. Models with a long battery life can be more expensive, but it’s often good advice to spend slightly more at the start rather than end up frustrated with a trimmer that cuts out after 20 minutes. Interchangeable Batteries

I used a 2.5aH battery with this hedge trimmer, which allowed me to work for 30 minutes. Just like most of the other cordless hedge trimmers that I tested, this battery was an 18V, yet the machine still felt more powerful than some of the others. I love how the battery has an LCD screen that displays the percentage of battery life left – it’s definitely more high-tech than the competition! It’s also quieter than some of the other hedge trimmers out there – ideal if you’re using it in close proximity to your neighbours.

Driven by a powerful 450W motor, the device has a cutting head that you can adjust between 60 to 80 degrees. The engine works at 1600 RPM of no-load speed to drive an extremely sharp dual-sided metal blade. The Makita Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer blows everything else in this review away, but it’s a petrol, commercial grade bit of kit designed to make light work of practically any hedge. The other models are battery electric cordless hedge pole trimmers and more suitable for home use and well worth a read with plenty of grunt for medium sized gardens. I just thought I’d drop it in if you’re in a rush and wanted to skip to the best cordless pole hedge trimmer full stop, otherwise keep reading, it’s a pretty balanced read in my mind (or at least, I tried to make it that 🙂 ! It produces a clean, smart cut every time which makes it ideal for topiary. You can then switch to the grass shear function to neaten up any bits that you’ve missed with your mower. Charging time can vary, and this is something to be aware of, especially if you don’t have the option of charging a spare battery whilst using the trimmer. Most long reach hedge trimmers also allow you to adjust the ‘head’ of the trimmer to change the cutting angle.

This 25cc petrol trimmer from Makita has a specially designed engine to reduce the level of noise and emissions coming from it while under operation. Don’t be fooled, petrol is still noisy, but Makita have significantly softened the blow with this model as it’s 4-Stroke, a far superior lasting engine to the 2-Strokes. Its telescoping handle extends up to 102 inches (2.6 meters) so that you can trim all the bushes and high hedges without using a ladder. So whether you are a professional or home user, you can try this Bosch tool that’s perfect for both small and big gardens. The safety features included in this machine were pretty standard, but, unlike the others that I tested, this one comes with a metal guard over the tip of the blade. For me, this was a little annoying as it means that the tip can’t be used for cutting. However, if your hedges are near a wall or are growing low to the ground, then the tip protector will save your blade from undergoing a fair bit of damage. There are lots of these cordless hedge trimmers on the UK market. So what makes this one different from the rest?
