About this deal

The ultimate multi-genre blend, Christophe Gans 2001 period murder mystery action horror thriller - with Mark Dacascos and martial arts - is one of the great underrated gems from the last quarter-Century. The Making of Brotherhood of the Wolf – The more aptly-titled segment runs nearly as long as the above, though the focus isn’t quite as centered on the lore, more of (as the title would indicate) the making of the film itself. All the usual pieces are in place, making for an interesting watch. Audio gives you a choice of a great and bombastic DTS 7.1 original French language mix and you also get a choice of an English dub which is LPCM Stereo. Andrew Hernandez on So Close | Blu-ray (88 Films) Agh! Why does it have to be Region B only!? This was a fun movie! This is a m…

The two outdoor fight sequences at the start proved to be some of the most challenging and exciting scenes to work on. “These were multi-camera, multi-day shots, with the original production enduring the four seasons weather wise,” Bigueur explains. La Legend’ is a fascinating piece too, which has an expert explore the history and facts of the actual Beast of Gévaudan. It helps you appreciate that whilst Gans and co-writer Stéphane Cabel took a number of liberties with the story, they did tell an otherwise fairly respectful account of the legend. Scream Factory doesn’t include the shorter theatrical cut, which some will consider a mistake. Also missing are two commentaries widely released in Europe. Everything here has been seen before on prior editions, so there is no fresh content for hardcore fans. In 18th century rural France, a royal knight and his Native American companion are called in to investigate several murders allegedly committed by some sort of supernatural beast.

Brotherhood of the Wolf 4K Audio

Set in revolutionary France during the 18th century, the movie opens with Thomas d’Apcher (Jacques Perrin), about to be taken to be executed and recounting the events of decades past, when royal naturalist Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) and his Native American companion Mani (Mark Dacascos) were sent by the King to investigate a series of killings in the rural county of Gévaudan. After being greeted by Thomas (now played by Jérémie Renier) they are introduced to the local dignitaries and high society families, where Fronsac falls in love with Count’s daughter Marianne de Morangias (Émilie Dequenne), although her brother Jean-François (Vincent Cassel), a well-travelled hunter who apparently lost the use of an arm fighting the great beasts of Africa, is suspicious of the new arrivals.

All of the supplements are found on the third disc, the Blu-ray that was bundled with the previously-released set. That said, it’s a decent selection of extras. We reviewed the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Brotherhood of the Wolf on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player.Deleted Scenes– Just over 40 minutes’ worth are included, each with an introduction by director Christophe Gans. Given the film’s already lengthy running time of 150 minutes, these were trimmed for the film’s final release. The film is a fascinating mix of period drama, action and horror with excellent costume design by Domonic Borg and gorgeous cinematography from Dan Lausten (Oscar-nominated for The Shape of Water). Andrew Hernandez on The White Storm 3: Heaven or Hell (2023) Review I had hopes for this one after MAAC gave it a positive review. Hopefully this… You can probably tell from my comment above about Shout’s previous Blu-ray release that I was no fan of the transfer used there. An aged master has been used on all releases up until now, and I’m very eager to report that this is absolutely the best the film has ever looked. The film itself was originally shot on 35mm and scanned at 2K to finish the digital effects, which required this 4K restoration to be a complete overhaul, involving the original film reels being scanned at 4K and in 16-bit color. The result is nothing short of spectacular, with the lush and highly detailed production design now being seen in all of its glory like it’s the first time. Those highly stylized sequences that ape bullet-time effects used in The Matrix look better than ever, with gorgeous textures, a nice and delicate layer of film grain, plus those old CGI effects are much better blended into the overall picture than in previous presentations. Starring Samuel Le Bihan, Vincent Cassel, Monica Bellucci, Émilie Dequenne, Mark Dacascos, Jérémie Renier, and Jacques Perrin.

It works so well that director Christophe Gans makes us wonder if an American crew would have made the film as entertaining. He borrows techniques from famous American and Asian films but knows exactly how to use them and how to make it seem more like an homage than piracy. Such care with filmmaking is seldom taken with larger productions anymore, and Brotherhood of the Wolf, though a low-profile release, is just as good as many popular American films of the same type. Thematically, the film may relate to Americans more than is apparent. The title refers to a secret society revealed late in the film, whose role is to protect the interests of the Catholic Church in rural France. With their hooded dress and secretive meetings, they bear more than a passing resemblance to the Ku Klux Klan, who were involved in “protecting the interests” of whites in the American South after the Civil War through similarly horrific means. Although for the most part director Gans simply portrays them as villainous characters, the parallels (likely unintentional) provide an interesting light on the historically based subplots. Video: How does it look? Hundreds have been killed by a mysterious beast hunting rural peasants in 18th century France. The Chevalier de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) and his native American friend Mani (Mark Dacascos) are sent by the King to the Gévaudan province looking for answers. Having cut their teeth together in the wilds of North America, Fronsac and Mani make a formidable team. The director went on to make a video game adaptation movie of Silent Hill (he is currently working on a sequel) and the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.
