MEET DETECTIVES HARRY LENNOX AND JESS WILDE IN THIS BRILLIANT NEW CRIME SERIES SET IN THE PICTURESQUE PENNINE FOOTHILLS IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND.

Detective Inspector Tom Calladine and Detective Sergeant Ruth Bayliss were called to a gruesome find at the local playground in Leesdon, England. A plastic bag with human fingers inside was the beginning of a horrific and brutal crime spree by a psychopathic killer who had no thought for his victims. Calladine and Bayliss were sure the crime was connected to the Hobfield housing estate where drug sales, criminals and the poor came together in one big area of poverty and illegal activities. Dead and Buried” is the fourth novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2016. Forty years ago, something horrible went down in Annie’s new house. I am fairly new to reading books by Helen H Durrant but I have read two so far and loved both them. I had this one on my wish list so was delighted when it was released. I love her writing style, the characters are great and work so well together. The plots are realistic, detailed and you can imagine them happening, unlike some other books out there which are good but a bit too unrealistic for me.Someone is targeting American students and who is Vida? How can these young women go missing and nobody knows or cares? Except Alice, a student who has been doing a bit of amateur investigation. Calladine's personal life is changing drastically and there's not much he can do about it. Some of the changes scare him, but some are welcome. There are some things still in limbo, and some new things on the horizon. Could Harry and Jess be hunting a serial killer? Will Harry’s past finally catch up with him? And will Jess find happiness with her new man?

But this is Calladine and with Ruth Bayliss' help he will put the pieces together and get the bad guys, all of them. A brand-new mystery from #1 bestselling author Helen H. Durrant that will have you gripped from start to explosive finish. The writing is exact, taut. She has breathed life into her characters. DI Calladine is dealing with personal problems, as well as work problems. He has a girlfriend, of sorts, that he's trying to break up with. His elderly mother is in a home and is having some health problems. His second in command DS Ruth Bayliss makes a great cop, but she doesn't take any guff off him. Tom's commanding officer is incompetent. And then there's the beautiful news reporter who wants an exclusive.DI Tom Calladine is the leader of his unit & we're told repeatedly he's smart & well regarded by his team. This was a bit of a mystery to me as many of his choices seemed more suitable for a rookie as opposed to a seasoned, experienced cop. We spend a lot of time in his head as he frets over every decision. You get a sense the author wants to portray him as an intelligent, decent guy but there's a real disconnect between that & his actions (particularly in regard to his personal life). I would have preferred a lot less "tell" & more "show". And just as an aside, I found his tendency to describe every female character in terms of her dress size a tad annoying. I read the first book in this series a few months ago and liked DI Tom Calladine so I was looking forward to this second book. In the first book, Tom had a lot of problems. Most have not resolved in this book, but that's what makes him interesting. His love life hasn't changed, his boss is still a poor manager, and his mother has recently died. Female students are going missing but nobody’s noticed yet “An outstanding police procedural that you won’t want to put down. Brilliant!” Chris Child Someone is targeting students from the USA…A serial killer, a local, hunting students who look like a woman he calls “Vida”. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Joy Ellis.

I started a new series today. Yup… another one! A British police procedural (my favorite kind) set in the Pennine foothills of northern England on the outskirts of Manchester.
