This story saw the first appearance of the Great Intelligence. It would return later that season in The Web of Fear [+] Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln, Doctor Who season 5 ( BBC1, 1968). but it would not make its next appearance until forty-four years later in The Snowmen [+] Steven Moffat, Doctor Who Christmas Special 2012 ( BBC One, 2012).. To date, this marks the longest interval between consecutive appearances by an antagonist in the franchise's history.

Left in peace, Padmasambhava dies. With the danger over, the travellers depart. Travers accompanies them up the mountain and his belief in the real Yeti is renewed when he spots one. He charges off to investigate as the TARDIS departs. The Doctor must convince the monks that not only is he not their enemy, but the real foe – and the power controlling the Yeti – is living amongst them. Their ancient Master, Padmasambhava, is being controlled by an alien entity known only as the Great Intelligence. The production team spent six days filming in Snowdonia. This was the longest location filming the series had experienced at the time.The Abominable Snowmen benefits from sincere performances from the cast and chillingly evil work from Wolfe Morris, as the voice of Master Padmasambhava, whose appearence resembles a cross between EC horror’s crypt keeper and the internet meme Wojak aka ‘the feels guy’. In the end “Padmas” goes all floaty in the manner of Mr. Burns in The X-Files episode of The Simpsons.

In Episode One, snow is seen on the TARDIS scanner; however, when the time travellers emerge, not a flake is visible.

The six new animated episodes are being made in full colour and high definition and will include the following exclusive special features: Most of the original 1967 master recordings of the six-part adventure The Abominable Snowmen were lost soon after the programme’s original transmission. However, audio-only recordings of all the episodes have survived and have been used here to create six brand new fully animated presentations of this lost classic, as well as the one surviving segment, Episode Two. Only episode two exists in the BBC Archives. It was released on The Troughton Years video. Episode two was also released in a digitally re-mastered form on the Lost in Time DVD. On a side note I was at doctor who time fracture today and absolutely loved it. If you are in the London area for whatever reason it’s worth going.
