Description

We live in a golden era of gin. It has become virtually impossible to keep up with the category because new distilleries seem to be popping up non-stop. Nowadays these delightful spirits are being crafted with such attention to detail that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to say which is the best gin out there. The omnipresence of the so called hipster snobbery has infiltrated the spirits industry and gin is no exception. The most important? “We founded everything on honest enthusiasm,” Miika says. “We want to display a very honest way of enjoying what we do and how we do it, and enjoying our product in the end.” a b c d e "Napue". Gin Foundry. 31 October 2015. Archived from the original on 12 December 2017 . Retrieved 11 December 2017. Rye is like a religion in Finland,” explains Miika Lipiäinen, who would go on to become the CEO of Kyrö Distilling Company. But while porridge and bread are common, not so much is known about the rye spirits that are popular abroad, particularly in the United States. To fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Kyrö began producing hand sanitizers in March 2020. First, their product was used by institutions critical to society (i.e. hospitals). Later on, they began selling hand sanitizer to consumers. However, the company doesn't turn a profit on this, instead selling it for a reasonable price. Because of the hand sanitizer production and sales, the company managed to avoid layoffs. [6] Awards [ edit ]

In 2016, Napue rye gin was given a gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition's premium gin series. [35] And what a botanical blend it is! In this gin, named after a tiny town where a terrible battle took place between Russia and Sweden in their long and protracted struggle for control of Finland (the typeface is even an exact replica of type that appears on the local war memorial) Napue Gin pays tribute to Finland by using locally-foraged botanicals in a Finnish rye base. I went full gintonica (Spanish style gin and tonic) for my G&T using my favourite garnish of rosemary with a wedge of fresh grapefruit. Napue and Tonic garnished with fresh rosemary and grapefruit. Koskue Gin So far, so fabulous – but these five friends were incredibly conscious of the perils that could await them if they barrelled head-long into business together without setting up some ground rules. Not going to lie – I’ve never heard of today’s gin. After a bit of research, it turns out Napue Gin is a small batch gin from the Finnish Kyro Distillery Company using rye grain as the base spirit. This gin won the inaugural IWSC Gin & Tonic trophy, so fingers crossed it’s good! (Side note: I was telling boy about this gin and pronouncing it in a variety of ways, then it appeared on Sunday Brunch and is apparently pronounced “Nap-we”. So there we go.) a b c d Cheang, Michael (26 September 2017). "Story of Finland's Napue Gin began with five guys in a sauna". The Straits Times. Archived from the original on 7 November 2017 . Retrieved 6 November 2017. The five founders of Kyrö Distillery Company – Miika Lipiainen, Mikko Koskinen, Kalle Valkonen, Miko Heinila, and Jouni Ritola – were drinking American rye whiskey together in the sauna, when someone raised this question: Why hadn't anyone made rye whiskey in Finland? After all, rye is Finland's No. 1 crop and it is a staple food for the Finns. As Miika explains, “Five founders is a lot, so we sat down and thought about the values we wanted to further in the company and in our lives. Did we want to change the world in similar ways? We really did – we saw the world in the same way, and our goals were the same.”
