By Aurélio de Figueiredo - Revista de História da Biblioteca Nacional (Issue 55), April 2010, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=11224829 It took him 4 whole years to get there, in which time he passed through the Middle East, crossed the Gobi Desert and battled illness in the Afghani mountains. But the events that did occur have gone down as one of the most incredible survival stories of all time. Here’s a brief synopsis: Aprilla, my love, if you ever see these words, know that I will keep my promise. I will protect you forever no matter what danger threatens our realm. He wrote and published a book about his escapades (aptly entitled ‘Rihla’, or ‘Travels’) that’s informed our current understanding of the places he explored around 7 centuries ago. Africa stole his heart, altered the course of his life, and led to the legacy for which he’s remembered.

By Unknown master of the Portuguese School.. - Own work - Daniel Villafruela - 17 September 2014, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=38093477 The South Pole had been conquered by Roald Amundsen (yet another Antarctic explorer, this time from Norway, who deserves a spot on this list) in 1911. It was this monumental discovery that led Amerigo Vespucci’s name to be attached to this so-called ‘New World’ in 1507. Did you know that when Dervla Murphy was 30, she set off on her simple, not-at-all-fancy bicycle and cycled from Dunkirk to Delhi? Or that she once crossed a river when the bridge had broken by holding onto a cow? What about prolific traveller Ibn Battuta, who left Morocco on a donkey aged 21 and didn't come home for 30 years? It’s got everything: wild adventures, world travel, narrow escapes, bitter vendettas, royal recognition, privateering (aka pirating), huge sea battles, and more…You name it, Drake lived through it.

Steve Irwin, often known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was an iconic Australian television personality, wildlife expert, and conservationist. Born on February 22, 1962, in Essendon, Victoria, Australia, Irwin's passion for animals was evident from an early age. His parents, Bob and Lyn Irwin, were wildlife experts who ran a reptile and fauna park in Queensland, which ignited Steve's love for wildlife. Essentially, it’s unknown whether his first voyage (the one that led to Vespucci’s name being given to the New World- as opposed to Columbus’) ever actually happened. Announcer: "Before previewing next week's Great Adventure, here is Gerald Gough, a teacher and member of the National Education Association, with a postscript on tonight's story." But seventeen-seventy-six was a time of miracles and for one unknown captain in Washington's army it was a moment of destiny."

They left in September 1519, went from Spain to Brazil and south to Patagonia, and then through the now-called ‘Strait of Magellan’ to reach the mighty Pacific Ocean. He went far and wide not for fame, honour, or glory (like many other great explorers on this list), but for the sake of travel itself. A spice merchant, navigator and map maker, John Cabot was already a well-travelled man by the time he led the voyage that made him famous. Thankfully, Cook’s claim was eventually refuted, and Peary was confirmed as the first man to reach the Pole. Sophia Florence wipes away a tear as she turns to face you. Hello ______, sorry if I seem somewhat antisocial but it has been many days since I last saw my father Lyndro and as each hour passes the possibility that he may never return becomes more apparent. While I have not given up hope it gets harder each day not to. If he is never to return to me I wish that I had something to remember him by, something that let me know he died just as brave a man as he has always been.

I hope one of this great party survives to return with good tidings to our friends and family, but our numbers are too thin I fear...and so is my blood...
