Please refer the links below for information on the support to you available from your funding agency: At Oxford, everyone is a member of a college as well as their subject department(s) and the University. Students therefore have both the benefits of belonging to a large, renowned institution and to a small and friendly academic community. Each college or hall is made up of academic and support staff, and students. Colleges provide a safe, supportive environment leaving you free to focus on your studies, enjoy time with friends and make the most of the huge variety of opportunities. If you have studied at undergraduate level before and completed your course, you will be classed as an Equivalent or Lower Qualification student (ELQ) and won’t be eligible to receive government or Oxford funding If you know nothing about art and would like to know more, we can help. Start with a book aimed at art enthusiasts that offers an overview of art periods. Choose one that is not too broad in its scope. Once you have a general idea of stylistic differences, find books by similar authors that describe how specific artworks are interpreted. This will provide a foundation on which you can build a fuller appreciation of art history. Students also have the opportunity to undertake a collections placement in one of the University museums, libraries or colleges in their second year.

Teaching usually takes place in the department or in a college, as well as in one of the Oxford museums and galleries where tutors often lecture in front of actual works of art. Visits to exhibitions or historical buildings will also be part of the course. While many of our incoming students have previously studied History of Art at A-level or have other Art School training, we recommend the following books in preparation for our BA programme, which stresses the importance of both historical research and critical thought. Despite what you may have heard about Art History being a frivolous course of study, it’s much more than just memorizing the names and dates of paintings. At its core, Art History is a dynamic field which ties together skills in history, criticism, anthropology, architecture, sociology, linguistics, economics, chemistry, and so on, all through the lens of art. Art historians don’t just end up as curators in museums (which are highly competitive positions). They can end up as artists, conservationists, critics, or involved in law, geopolitics, and social justice. The key component of the First Year curriculum is the Foundation Course and Core Course. The following is a suggested reading list: The most important preparation for History of Art at King's involves learning to train your visual memory and to develop your own critical skills. Visit as many museums and exhibitions as you can, taking descriptive notes of what you see. Visit buildings such as churches or country houses; you may find it helpful to record them photographically.

A typical week

For a more complete look at art from around the world, this highly visual and engaging art history book will educate and inspire a new appreciation for art. It is accessible without being pedestrian and is perfect for artists and enthusiasts with a wide range of experiences. Most art history books include multiple illustrations in color, making them more expensive than average. So, before you buy, make sure that the content of the book meets your specific needs

For courses starting on or after 1 August 2021, the UK government has confirmed that EU, other EEA, and Swiss Nationals will be eligible for student finance from the UK government if they have UK citizens’ rights (i.e. if they have pre-settled or settled status, or if they are an Irish citizen covered by the Common Travel Area arrangement). The support you can access from the government will depend on your residency status. In addition to beautiful illustrations and eye-catching colors, the book features a helpful glossary that can help break down complex movements and styles for people of all levels of understanding. It is also brief, applying descriptions and history in an accessible format that won’t bog down someone new to art. Students will also be introduced to the different critical approaches or 'methodologies' used in the discipline. For this we recommend the following as primers:

Isabella studied at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English Literature & Language and Psychology. Throughout her undergraduate years, she took Art History as an additional subject and absolutely loved it. Building on from her art history knowledge that began in high school, art has always been a particular area of fascination for her. From learning about artworks previously unknown to her, or sharpening her existing understanding of specific works, the ability to continue learning within this interesting sphere excites her greatly. As these books will function as reference materials and be in continuous use, buy the best quality book with the best quality illustrations you can afford. No previous experience or qualifications are required for these courses and they do not form part of the assessment. Her focal points of interest in art history encompass profiling specific artists and art movements, as it is these areas where she is able to really dig deep into the rich narrative of the art world. Additionally, she particularly enjoys exploring the different artistic styles of the 20 th century, as well as the important impact that female artists have had on the development of art history.

Both art students, artists, and enthusiasts will enjoy Hagen’s analysis of symbolism and visual elements artists use when creating their works of art. Although the focus of this book is narrow, the content is intriguing while also being fun to read. If you like solving mysteries or putting together complex puzzles, this book is something you will want to add to your bookshelves. If you are a beginner looking to expand your knowledge on notable artists who have influenced our world with their work, I highly recommend this book as it is an excellent place to start. Please select 'see course data' on the following course option to view the full Unistats data for History of Art. A thrilling journey through 100,000 years of art, from the first artworks ever made to art’s central role in culture todayEach college has a unique character, but generally their facilities are similar. Each one, large or small, will have the following essential facilities: I loved how often Buddhist art was mentioned in particular, along with other non-Western cultural/religious art. The same goes for highlighting lesser known female artists. Remember, art history is not a static but a dynamic field. Keeping abreast of new perspectives on how art has historically been made and interpreted will keep your own artistic practice equally dynamic. Mullins introduces readers to the Terracotta Army and Nok sculptures, Renaissance artists such as Giotto and Michelangelo, trailblazers including Käthe Kollwitz, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and contemporary artists who create art as resistance, such as Ai Weiwei and Shirin Neshat. She also restores forgotten artists such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Guan Daosheng and Jacob Lawrence, and travels to the Niger valley, Peru, Java, Rapa Nui and Australia, to broaden our understanding of what art is and should be.

During the course you will study the critical approaches of past authors, many of whom offer inspiring views of the subject. Examples include: Living costs at Oxford might be less than you’d expect, as our world-class resources and college provision can help keep costs down. A tuition fee loan is available from the UK government to cover course fees in full for Home (UK, Irish nationals and other eligible students with UK citizens' rights - see below*) students undertaking their first undergraduate degree**, so you don’t need to pay your course fees up front.Final University examinations: four or five written papers, one or two extended essay(s) and one thesis You need a historical overview, because not only do the styles, techniques and materials that artists use to make art vary across time-periods, audiences and reasons for making art differ too. You also need to know what art historians consider and look for when interpreting artworks.
