This also applies to monitors. We only consider a monitor to have HDMI 2.1 ports if those ports support higher bandwidth formats over HDMI. For example, if a monitor supports 4k @ 60Hz with a 10-bit, 4:4:4 signal, it's HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.1 ports can support different maximum bandwidths, but as long as they support more than the 18Gbps limit of HDMI 2.0, we consider them HDMI 2.1 ports. GoPro cameras, digital cameras, video cameras, and even some tablets and smartphones can be connected from their Micro HDMI ports to send 4K data at 60Hz at up to 18Gbps speeds to TVs, computer monitors, and projectors. The same goes the other way around, as you can easily use the Ultra High Speed cable on any older HDMI device. Q: Can my existing devices be upgraded? Certified or tested cables have been tested to make sure they work reliably, and that they’ll support the resolutions and gaming/AV features that they should based on their category. Now we're in 2022, HDMI 2.1 has become much more commonplace. But 2021 is the year it went mainstream. Before that it only received piecemeal support on a handful of high-end sets, often with only one HDMI 2.1 port with two or three HDMI 2.0 ports alongside. Like AMD's FreeSync or NVIDIA's G-SYNC, the HDMI group has created their own version of the VESA Adaptive Sync protocol, called HDMI Forum VRR. It's a VRR format that seems to only work with HDMI 2.1 sources, and the Xbox Series X currently supports it alongside its FreeSync VRR support. The PS5 should also receiveHDMI Forum VRR support in a future firmware update. Note that not all HDMI 2.1 TVs support HDMI Forum VRR, as is the case with the LG UN8500.The big elephant in the room here is that it was revealed in December 2021 that many TVs labelled HDMI 2.1 might not come with all of the features you'd expect from HDMI 2.1. We cover why this is important in this guide, but what you need to know is that just because a TV says it has HDMI 2.1 capabilities doesn't mean it'll do everything you need it to.
