About this deal

Basement Jaxx is the electro/dance brain child of Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton. The UK duo has enjoyed a celebrated and commercial career with a number of their singles becoming hits in their homeland as well as having the prestigious opportunity to headline the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival. The reason Basement Jaxx has attained such relevance though is due to the huge production values of their live show. Then, those huge drums crash in over you. You now are under their control. For a split second, the samba beat drops away and leaves the gloriously chunky synth line to take precedence. That synth isn't in Moreira's original recording, and it's a lovely improvement. If you squint, 'Oh My Gosh' and 'Hush Boy' are the first two instalments in an unfinished Vulu Malinga trilogy. Who do we blame for turning these into the Basement Jaxx equivalent of the Hellboy movies? (I mean, those movies are great but we could have done with one more.) It's a collection of all our popular songs really, a collection where people could get all the main songs that they liked. It seemed like a good idea to put it out now because a lot of people were coming to our shows and didn't really know that a song like " Romeo" was by the same people who did " Where's Your Head At". Our music [across the years] is quite different so it has probably taken people a while to realise that it's all by the same band. So yeah, that was why really. It could be a collection for people who'd only just found out about us, or seen a live show and wanted to get our music. [1]

Basement Jaxx's manager, Andrew Mansi, says Astralwerks chose not to renew its U.S. licensing contract with the duo. [13] For a house group that's put together a lot of builds in the past, the speed-ramping applied to Fanfare Ciocărlia's 'Asfalt Tango' is one of their most creative - and most fun. In 2019, the duo composed the music for the CITV animated series The Rubbish World of Dave Spud. The duo also collaborated with The Sydney Metropolitan Orchestra for a live re-imagining of some of their classic songs. [39]

Glamma Kid's brief 'Fly Life' cameo suggested otherwise, rest assured that the gentlemen of Basement Jaxx know their dancehall and reggae culture. Did you know that Ratcliffe runs a sound system in his spare time, named after the dub reggae legend King Tubby? 'Jump and Shout' is the band flexing their bonafides, and the rubbery beat is the closest they've come to making a riddim. Slarta John keeps the song's energy high with his best wild-eye act – his manic howling of the title sounds as though he's trying to eat the microphone whole – but it raises a tantalising concept of Ratcliffe and Buxton shopping riddims to the Caribbean's finest. (I would kill to hear Baby Cham bug out over this.) As it stands, 'Jump 'N Shout' is a fun burst of energy. It's a lot less ornate than their bigger hits, but as raw as the group ever get in their escapades.

True to form, part of their work on that follow up was putting on another club night, which they called Rooty. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it became the title of their second album, which was released in 2001. It was another critical and commercial smash, giving the world the deathless hit "Where's Your Head At" in the process. Ever since then they’ve held on to their title of the “other” elder statesmen of British dance music alongside The aforementioned Prodigy with aplomb. They’ve headlined Glastonbury, sold out arenas and collaborated with the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Siouxsie Sioux. They’re a shoo in for the status of national treasures, and it all stemmed from wanting to put on a good party and make some good music. Mission accomplished, I think.
