Description

The film leaves audience members to decide for themselves whether Jesse and Céline will meet again in six months. Critic Robin Wood has written that, after he published an essay on the film (in a 1996 issue of CineAction), Linklater wrote him to say that "neither he nor the two actors ever doubted that the date would be kept." Top 25 Modern Romances". Entertainment Weekly. February 8, 2002. Archived from the original on December 2, 2008 . Retrieved February 26, 2009. I really enjoyed eating apple strudel and drinking Viennese melange in this place. If you visit, please know that the waiters are rude to everyone, not just you. After visiting a few landmarks in Vienna, they share a kiss at the top of the Wiener Riesenrad at sunset and start to feel a romantic connection. As they continue to roam around the city, they begin to talk more openly with each other, with conversations ranging from topics about love, life, religion, and their observations of Vienna. Céline tells Jesse that her last boyfriend broke up with her six months ago, claiming that she "loved him too much.” When questioned, Jesse reveals he had initially come to Europe to spend time with his girlfriend who was studying in Madrid, but they broke up soon after he was there. He found a cheap flight home, via Vienna, but it did not leave for two weeks so he bought a Eurail pass and traveled around Europe. They wander into this grungy establishment and drink local Viennese Ottakringer beer and play pinball. Director Richard Linklater also makes a cameo appearance in this scene! Arena 15. Mölker Steig

Maslin, Janet (January 27, 1995). "Strangers on a Train and Soul Mates for a Night". The New York Times . Retrieved February 11, 2009.Before Sunrise works principally for two reasons - realistic acting and an immense script that builds the characters through their thoughts and feelings and thus allows us to get to know them as we do the people in real life. This allows the characters to be free, and it's easy to believe that these are real people and not just actors working from a script. This also allows us to feel for the characters for who they are, and not merely because they're the protagonists. This kind of realism is hard to capture as, at the end of the day, we as the audience know that they're watching a film and not observing real life; but Before Sunrise represents one of the truest to life exhibitions of realism ever to be seen on screen. A truly great script cannot work on it's own, and needs great actors to deliver it to an extent that does it justice, and although I'm not a fan of either Julie Deply or Ethan Hawke; on viewing this film, there is nothing you can do but give them both respect. I don't know whether they were in character or just playing themselves, but when a film is this good; it hardly matters.

Many movie fans think Linklater shot this scene next to the Danube River, but he didn’t. The Danube is actually a bit of a trek outside the city centre. Baumgarten, Marjorie (January 27, 1995). " Before Sunrise". The Austin Chronicle. Archived from the original on February 1, 2009 . Retrieved February 11, 2009. In English, Friedhof der Namenlosen translates to ‘Cemetery of the Nameless’. It’s a small cemetery with the graves of unknown people who washed up on the banks of the Danube. No one has been buried there for over 80 years and Céline pauses at a grave with the name ‘Elizabeth’.

DIAGNOSTIC INFO

Bear with me for the next group of Before Sunrisefilm locations because they’re literally just walking through a few streets. First, Céline and Jesse walk along a narrow, cobblestone street called Mölker Steig. They begin near the steps and walk towards Schreyvogelgasse. Jesse and Céline finally share their first kiss on the Ferris wheel and play the ‘Punch Belly’ strength tester game. After perking themselves up with coffee, the young lovers continue their walk around Vienna by hanging out in front of the Albertina. You’ll find this area under Albrechtsbrunnen on Google Maps.
