Halo: Primordium is the second book in The Forerunner Saga, a trilogy of Halo Expanded Universe novels by Greg Bear, published in 2012. The book takes place during the time of the Forerunners, the ancient race that built the Halo rings encountered in the games. Though mostly set during the Forerunners' war with the Flood, the novel is told as a series of logs narrated by a Forerunner Monitor discovered by an ONI science team. The monitor explains that it was once a human named Chakas (one of the main characters of the previous novel Halo: Cryptum) and proceeds to tell its story, which turns out to involve a lot of walking around on a Halo. After crossing an ocean, the trio are found by a Lifeworker who accompanies them with several other humans and a giant ape named Mara. While sleeping at night in the refugee center, Chakas is greeted by Riser who warns him not to trust the Lifeworker; the others are revealed to be illusions run by Forerunner computers called monitors, who are there to extract their spirits and store them as monitors. Gamelpar dies due to old age. The imprints in Riser and Chakas converse and recall the discovery of the Primordial. The Primordial was a Precursor mutated and evolved to survive vast passages of time, [4] to the point it no longer resembled the Precursors as they appeared at the time of the Forerunners' campaign against them. [7] Some later believed it to have been an artificial being, [8] perhaps a very early form of Gravemind, created from several creatures; the exact number was never determined, but Forthencho theorized that there had been at least twelve. [9] Forerunner researchers were unable to conclusively determine whether the entity was truly connected to the Flood, [10] although there was believed to have been a link between the two.
