About this deal

Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey, however, is a creature of a different lineage. As stated before, it is named for the distillery rather than actually made there. The brand predates the reactivation of the distillery, and as a blended Irish whiskey, much of the content comes from whiskey types that cannot even be made at Kilbeggan. According to some early reports, pot still whiskey made at the distillery was not even supposed to become available until 2014. There are some legal and technical regulations around exactly how it can be made, but Irish whiskey, put simply, is whiskey distilled in Ireland. (When it comes to whiskey, Ireland includes both the independent Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK.) Many brands are distilled three times in copper pot stills, but other distilleries and styles use other methods and types of still. Some whiskeys are made from only malted barley, while others use a combination of barley and other grains.

One of the things I like most about Paddy is that it has a taste that is fairly inoffensive to novice whiskey sippers, which makes it a go-to for any occasion that warrants a bring-a-bottle-buzz. Noted devotees of the distillery's whiskeys include British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, and Myles na gCopaleen, the Irish playwright. [2] History [ edit ] Early years [ edit ] But that wasn’t the case. I first tried the 45% blended Irish whiskey, with its palate of velvety texture and sweet flavours, during a visit to the Dublin distillery and I was very pleasantly surprised. When I first poured this whiskey, the paint thinner note kind of turned me off. However, I gave it a second chance recently and after I waited for that note to fade away in the glass, I really started to enjoy this one. For me, it’s turned into the perfect “after work” starter dram. Something I can sip while making dinner or nagging my kids to do their homework. Kilbeggan has won awards in the past, including silver medals at the International Wine & Spirits Competition and SF World Spirits Competition in 2007 and 2008.

Tullamore D.E.W is the smoothest Irish whiskey, in my opinion, and it’s always very well priced, which will suit those looking for a good Irish whiskey on a budget. Regardless of where it originated, if you’re looking to do a whiskey tour in Ireland, you certainly won’t be short on options. If you’re a fan of old school, start where it all began at the Kilbeggan Distillery in Westmeath. There’s no better place to learn about the history of whiskey, the process of distillation and of course to sample some of the finished product. In 2010, with the installation of a mash tun and fermentation vats, Kilbeggan became a fully operational distillery once again. [4] Present day [ edit ] Irish whiskey can legally be made from any type of grain, and different brands use different grains in different combinations, which is why there's such a wide range of flavors available. Sometimes the grains are fermented and distilled individually and blended afterward, and sometimes they're combined before fermentation. For a world-class whiskey that's worth every penny, we recommend the renowned Redbreast 15 Year Irish Whiskey. For a more affordable dram great for mixing or sipping, try Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey. FAQs What is Irish whiskey?
