About this deal

The use of highly contrasting colours in a set like this is simply pointless and I never understood it myself. I dislike it when I come across it but that's it; but the sheer disdain for people openly sharing their opinion about this is simply mind-boggling. Let’s jump straight into the review and see if we can make the set spill its beans (a reference to Robert Eggers film The Lighthouse, one of my favourite movies in the modern era) This is incredibly ingenious, and true to the design of classical lighthouses, and is such an incredible piece of LEGO engineering that will surely add so much to the enjoyment and accuracy of the set.

The Detective’s Office got a real mirror because the piece they chromed was officially classified as a “fabric” element. If it was a regular element, chrome never would have been allowed. And thank you @TomKazutara for repeatedly speaking out for us the tiny minority. (And yes my house is bland and I have a boring life, thank you.)" The fact it's also functional is the icing on the cake. However, as I said above, it's not as impressive as it could be because the LED is too weak to cast much light around the room. If there's ever a set that would benefit from a 3rd party lighting kit to provide something with a bit more oomph, this is it.

Construction

Some people are confused by or complain about multi-colored assemblies in the belly of builds. Why are they done that way? Well, apart from the aforementioned nod, it’s my understanding that there are a small handful of reasons for this. First, bright and diverse colors make it easier to follow the instructions and see what you’re doing with a model. It’s also fun, and otherwise breaks up a build with primarily neutral colors. Other things you might not have thought of include part availability and cost of production. (i.e. Why do a whole run of a new part color when it’s just going to get covered up and you have others on hand?) So off into my coat cabinet to try it out, and of boy does it work satisfyingly well. When tuned on, the lantern room rotates at a healthy pace, and most importantly, the light, focused by the fresnel lens does seem to have a lot more power. Great review, thanks! I already liked the set when it was revealed, and this only confirms that first impression, maybe even makes me like it more. It's not perfect, but no real biggies. Alternatively, it could make an excellent table or room feature lamp if you forgo the rotating mechanism inside the lantern room and replace it with a low voltage G4 or similar LED light bulb, powered by a new cable run up through the tower.

Although it's your opinion to think that it's ugly, at least during the building process, you mentioned that it is covered up in the end, so why is it such a big deal that a hidden part of the set is "ugly" when you'll never see it? The inside of a drain pipe is probably uglier (and smells) more than most things, yet you probably don't concern yourself with that because you'll never see it. The stove is illuminated from behind by the second of the two LEDs and its glow can be seen through the windows in a darkened room and it looks quite cool. For some (not all, don't want to sound snobby or mr. know it all) who don't know why they have certain colorful parts within a kit is that Lego designers use other colors to make it easier to follow the instructions and build the model. The original design wasn’t to microfig scale, so no minifigures were included. Thankfully the designers have changed it to minigigure scale and have included two excellent minifigures included. No lighthouse set would be complete without a keeper so we get one and a sailor to go with the rowing boat. Both are exclusive to this set. The Fresnel Lens and dark blue base plate should make LEGO element enthusiasts very happy, and in my head, does justify the price slightly. What do you think of LEGO’s efforts here with the Motorised Lighthouse? Is LEGO asking too much for this set?
