We reserve the right to refuse installation should our engineers think that the existing electrical or plumbing points are unsafe and in need of maintenance or if they are unable to install to existing furniture. The Sage looks fantastic, but initially I wasn’t particularly impressed when slotting in the bread. The two slots aren’t quite long enough to hold a large slice of bread horizontally. This meant that it had to be placed in the toaster vertically. Would the top of the slice go unbrowned? Above this are four buttons: A Bit More, Crumpet/Fruit Loaf that promises extra heat to the middle elements, Frozen, Cancel. There’s no button for reheating toast. Perhaps the more exciting features (and what you’re paying for) are the five auto features designed to make toasting a breeze. The buttons are self-explanatory, so you won’t have to decipher complicated symbols.

The beep at the end of the toasting cycle is handy but it happens at the exact same time as the toast popping up, so the sound is masked. It would be better if it beeped a second earlier or later. The best two-slot toaster we’ve tested is the KitchenAid Artisan, but it’s very pricey. If you’re open to the idea of a four-slot toaster than the Dualit and Hotpoint are our favourites, or maybe the Morphy Richards Rose Gold Toaster if you’re on a budget. You can push the lever up at any time to inspect, without halting toasting, and there’s a high lift for reaching small stuff.

Toast took 2 minutes 40 seconds and was cooked perfectly, very even. The vertical slice was great too, with less than 1cm at the top only slightly underdone. Toast texture was perfect: crisp on the outside but not dried out The Sage Smart Toast looks simple yet sophisticated with its solid brushed stainless steel design. Unlike other humongous, premium toasters, it's reasonably light and doesn’t take up heaps of kitchen counter space.

Any work conducted by a third part gas safe engineer will be at the customer’s expense and we will not accept any liability for their work. The design is quite flexible. It looks best with the controls at the front, taking up a fairly narrow amount of worktop. But you could have the controls at the left or right and they’d still be usable. If toast isn’t quite done enough for your taste, use the “A bit more” button to continue toasting for a further 30 seconds.
