About this deal

I should mention that I have only tested this full-frame lens using my astrophotography DSLR’s, all of which are crop-sensor camera bodies. This creates an effective focal length of roughly 200mm, a useful magnification for a wide variety of astro-imaging scenarios. Lens Filters Clear UV and Protection Filters Polarising Filters Neutral Density Filters Cokin Creative Filter System Other Filters Filter Stepping Rings Close-Up Lenses If you guys get a chance to obtain a Konica AR 135mm 3.5 you should test it, it is a gem of a lens and hold sharpness well even on the a7r2. Set the focus ring at infinity and set the aperture setting wide open, i.e. f/2. Setting the lens to infinity will bring you into the correct range for focusing on stars, and only small refinements will be needed from here.

The full name of this lens is the Rokinon 135mm F/2 ED UMC, with “ED” standing for extra-low dispersion, and UMC referring to the “ultra multi-coated” optics. This is a fully manual lens, meaning that it does not have autofocus, and you must manually select the f-stop using the aperture ring at the base of the lens. The Cygnus Loop (Veil Complex); This supernova remnant is split into the Eastern Veil and Western Veil nebulae, but the Samyang 135mm f/2 lens will allow you to capture the whole thing. I would recommend a dual narrowband filter for this target, such as the L-eNhance filter by Optolong, to really help bring out the whispy details. The Deko platform is provided by Pay4Later Ltd, t/a Deko which acts as a credit broker, not a lender and does not charge you for credit broking services. Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy. At f/5.6, there is noticeable darkening and it continues to darken as the lens is stopped down further. My preference is to compose (for the brighter viewfinder) and focus (better precision with a shallower DOF) with the aperture set to f/2, then adjust the aperture to the desired setting prior to photographing. The image below highlights the creative freedom this lens provides. To fit the Heart and Soul Nebulae in a single frame requires an extremely wide field of view (compared to the magnification of most telescopes). The 135mm focal length is absolutely perfect for the Heart and Soul Nebulae if you’re using a crop sensor DSLR camera.

While the camera's autoexposure system can still be used, the aperture is *always* manually set via an aperture ring located near the lens mount. There are some negatives, but for the price point, I think these are minor issues when it comes to using this lens for astrophotography. Note that Samyang used to make their lenses available in a variety of brands, but market demand led to only the top-selling Samyang and Rokinon-brand lenses remaining in its product lineup.

So let’s take a look at close-up sharpness. I can’t see any significant difference between f/2.0 and f/5.6, maybe f/2.0 is even a tad sharper but this is not worth noting when it comes to performance in the field. You only stop this lens down when you need the depth of field, not to gain sharpness. The excellent close up performance hints that this lens could be turned into a great macro lens when using extension tubes. Even without them, the good maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4 lets you get pretty close to the subject. With an effective focal length of roughly 216mm when coupled with a Canon crop sensor body, the field of view is nearly identical to the one you’d find on a full-frame camera with a 200mm telephoto lens. That’s quite a jump from 135mm, so the camera body you use with this lens may change the types of targets you shoot. With its focal length and wide max aperture, this lens, as mentioned in the beginning of the review, is one of the highest bokeh per dollar lenses available. More surprising is that, using a flat target perfectly aligned in the center of the plane of sharp focus, practically no change is seen over the entire aperture range until the softening effects of diffraction are reached. At half the price of the Canon 135mm f/2L, less than half the price of the Nikon 135mm f/2 and roughly 1/4 of the price of the Zeiss 135mm f/2, The Samyang 135mm f/2 Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon, Sony/Minolta and Pentax K mounts along with versions for Fujifilm X and Four Thirds mounts.
