The outcome pleased Evans who said: ‘I was glad to see the four boys recognised. Blair MacFarlane was outstanding last season, whilst Daniel Sloss is always good. He’s our captain and the way he trains and performs leads the way for everyone else. Daniel MacVicar had a great season up front, getting in amongst the goals, whilst keeper Cammy Sutherland has stepped up this year. He was fantastic and earned the club’s player of the year accolade. He is at least eight out of ten most weeks and is so committed. If only everyone was as committed as Cammy.’

How Kyles Athletic didn’t win the tie during the second half is a mystery but a combination of missed chances, resolute defending and great goalkeeping will leave them with plenty regrets as they reflect on the day. Kyles defeated lower league Bute 4-1 to claim the remaining quarter-final place in the Tulloch Camanachd Cup.

The Skye supporters bus, organised as ever by Finlay MacLean, set off from Skeabost at 9.30am, no doubt making a couple of stops for refreshments en route!

Newtonmore’s route to the final started of with a 3-2 win in Glasgow against Mid Argyll. They followed this up with a 4-1 home victory over Caberfeidh. They just edged out Oban Celtic in the semi final in a 7 goal thriller – after initially taking a 4 goal lead - to set up a place in the final against Skye Camanachd. That training certainly paid off on the road to the final, which was no easy one. Having dismissed Lovat 4-1 in the first round Skye defeated Kingussie 3-1 in the second. In the semi-final they met tough opposition from Fort William before securing a 4-2 victory in extra time. Now they were to meet that other giant of Badenoch shinty, Newtonmore, with their formidable record of Camanachd Cup performances — they had appeared in the final 46 times and won itno less than 28 times. Even in one of their more indifferent years the thought of confronting them onsuch a stage was an awesome one, made no less awesome in the weeks before the match by the high level of media interest and the heightened expectations created by the hype. The combination of a romantic and famous island, and a shinty team which was well known and yet so starved of trophies down the years, was irresistible. Whatever happened, history was to be made. Boleskine / Aberdeen University / Strathglass / Glenurquhart / Glasgow Mid Argyll / Tayforth / Uddingston Deek Cameron missed a great chance when he fired over after 70 minutes but a minute later Victor Smith did find the net from a tight angle to make it 2-1 and it was clear that this game was going down to the wire. Marc MacLachlan’s last minute winner sent Lovat through to the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final as they beat Kyles Athletic 3-2 in their 4.05pm throw up at An Aird. Then, with just a couple of minutes remaining, Caitlin MacLean’s goal sent Skye through to the final. This was the twelfth successive time Lewis Camanachd had collected maximum points and they took the lead through Donnie MacRae in the opening minute. GMA seemed to weather the early Skye storm and they introduced Kirsty Rodger from the bench midway through the first half and although the Glasgow side came more into it, the Skye defence of Christina MacDonald, Katherine Dibble and Leah MacLeod were well-drilled.

Oban Camanachd round off their pre-season programme against Kilmallie at Canal Parks on Saturday February 25, a week before the new competitive shinty season starts. Gareth Evans, manager of Oban Camanachd. Oban Celtic training

Instrumental in the re-establishment of the club was Donald R. MacDonald, known as "DR", who was a Scottish Gaelic teacher at Portree High School. The coaching of shinty which he started in the High School sowed the seeds of Skye's greatest success, the Camanachd Cup win of 1990. [2] DR managed the first team in the early 2000s and his sons, Somhairle, Aonghas and Gilleasbuig, all went on to play for the club. Aonghas also managed the club between 2009 and 2010. DR died in March 2010 on the first day of that year's shinty season, and Skye's matches were cancelled that day. [3] A large Skye support braved the heavy rain and they engulfed all four sides of the King George V touchline.
