About this deal

In one volume for the first time, this revised and updated examination of how J.R.R. Tolkien came to write his original masterpiece " The Hobbit". The Tolkien scholar Mark T. Hooker has catalogued a lengthy series of parallels between The Hobbit and Jules Verne's 1864 Journey to the Center of the Earth. These include, among other things, a hidden runic message and a celestial alignment that direct the adventurers to the goals of their quests. [24]

Aarseth, Espen (2004). "Quest Games as Post-Narrative Discourse". In Ryan, Marie-Laure (ed.). Narrative Across Media: The Languages of Storytelling. University of Nebraska Press. p.366. ISBN 978-0-8032-3944-9. The History of The Hobbit was first published in 2007, and across two volumes features Tolkien’s drafts and notes on The Hobbit, previously unpublished artwork, and even Tolkien’s abandoned attempt at rewriting The Hobbit. All of this is collected together with commentary from Rateliff. A revised one-volume was published in 2011, which included additional information including on runes and Tengwar, and timeline of events. In an interview conducted before the publication, Rateliff described the undertaking in the following way: Lewis compares the book to Alice in Wonderland in that both children and adults may find different things to enjoy in it, and places it alongside Flatland, Phantastes, and The Wind in the Willows. [114] W. H. Auden, in his review of the sequel The Fellowship of the Ring, calls The Hobbit "one of the best children's stories of this century". [115] Auden was later to correspond with Tolkien, and they became friends. Now with The Hobbit Movie being produced and next year celebrating 75 years The Hobbit, it is nice to see that HarperCollins has decided to bring us a revised and updated One Volume Edition of The History of The Hobbit.

The Hobbits of the Shire developed the custom of giving away gifts on their birthdays instead of receiving them. They use the term Mathom for old and assorted objects, which are invariably given as presents many times over or were stored in a museum ( Mathom-house). The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún · The Fall of Arthur · The Story of Kullervo · The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun As well as reproducing the original version of one of literature's most famous stories, both on its own merits and as the foundation for The Lord of the Rings, this new book includes many little-known illustrations and previously unpublished maps for The Hobbit by Tolkien himself. Also featured are extensive annotations and commentaries on the date of composition, how Tolkien's professional and early mythological writings influenced the story, the imaginary geography he created, and how Tolkien came to revise the book years after publication to accommodate events in The Lord of the Rings. Contains the second half of Tolkien's original manuscript draft, with commentary and later drafts and appendices.
