I think the problem was all the characters were less likable, with the exception of Svanhild. Ragnvald had too little freedom in this novel as he was relegated to King Harald's war servant. King Harald lost that boy arrogance from the first novel that made him kind of fun and charming. Now he just seemed like a pompous, selfish ass and Solvi, oh man don't get me started.
