About this deal

The new P5 AI Intelligent Picture Engine uses neural networks and machine learning to adjust the balance between Philips’ five pillars of PQ – source, colour, contrast, motion and sharpness – for a more realistic and natural image. Panel uniformity is very good on the Philips 65OLED807 with no signs of dirty screen effect or banding on brighter patterns. A 5% grey slide held up well with just some mild banding seen in very dark surroundings, however, this is not seen within actual viewing content, even in dark scenes in dim viewing surroundings. We also didn’t encounter any vignetting to the edges of the panel. The longest time for my TV I’ve seen is 522 minutes before the OFFRS above and 254 hours before the JB, so that’s around 8 hours before needing the 10 minute refresh - does that fit with your on time? All the announced (and unannounced) 2021 OLED models feature the ‘6’ suffix, so the OLED705 lead us to imagine it has more in common with the 2020 TVs.Philips’ TV App collection is left out, though we can’t imagine many will be crestfallen by that. There is VRR but no eARC or an auto low latency mode. The Philips OLED807 certainly has a lot of competition this year - but we’d say it has more than enough unique qualities to stand out from the crowd. The 8506 series is Philips’ affordable range of TVs aimed at the mainstream buyer. They’re available in many sizes and carry some of the premium features seen in the TVs above. Driving this new grade of panel, meanwhile, is a new version of Philips’ P5 picture engine. Previous generations of this system, which applies dozens of separate processing elements to five core picture elements (contrast, colour, motion, sharpness and source detection) have already eked out levels of peak brightness that have eluded OLED rivals. In combination with the OLED EX panel, it's quite a spectacle. Both come with Philips’ latest 5th-gen P5 AI Dual Picture engine, which brings AI enhancements to reduce banding in images and bring more sharpness. According to Philips, they also have a new OLED panel, Ambilight, the built-in smart lighting system in previous Philips TVs, an audio overhaul thanks to the continued collaboration with Bower & Wilkins and much more to get excited about.

The sharpness isn’t messed up by camera pans or fast moving objects, either, thanks to Philips’ excellent motion compensation processing. The ‘Standard’ setting for this that’s the default for some picture presets is too aggressive, creating too much soap opera effect (excessive fluidity) and too many unwanted side effects. Its Pure Cinema and Movie settings, though, both offer excellent options for taking the edge off hardware judder without the image starting to look unnatural or uncinematic. The Philips 65OLED807 is a great performer at the price point and market position sitting just below the OLED+ models in the Philips lineup. It has support for all currently used HDR formats, two full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs with 4K120 support at full resolution with VRR, FreeSync and G-Sync support, a decent smart TV system and the USP of four-sided Ambilight. If you have the space for a 77-inch TV and want a wonderfully immersive OLED that doesn’t require you to remortgage your house, the LG OLED77C2 is the one to get. Value for money: The 77-inch C2 has always been very good value for a TV of its size and ability, but that's even more the case now that it's a year old and has been significantly discounted. There is a replacement model, the 77-inch C3, but you would have to pay a lot more for that and the upgrades are slight. If you're in the market for a 77-inch OLED TV, we recommend going for a C2 while it's still available and discounted. The only slight flaw with the OLED806’s delivery of Interstellar is that it doesn’t suppress the film grain in the way that some other TVs do, even when noise reduction is switched on. One could easily argue, though, that the film grain is part of the presentation, and it’s certainly not something that we find off-putting. The Philips 65OLED806 delivers an exceptionally sharp and punchy picture, the full HDMI 2.1 feature set and support for all HDR formats including both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. HDR10+ Adaptive is on board, too, allowing the TV to automatically adjust HDR10+ content to ambient lighting conditions. The A95L is the successor to the A95K, arguably the best TVof last year if you don't take price into account. One of the two first QD-OLEDTVs launched, it trumped its Samsung S95Brival by deploying its brightness-boosting, vibrancy-adding Quantum Dots in a more considered and authentic fashion – and by offering a far superior sound system to boot.

Design and features: The 42-inch C3 has a different design to its larger siblings that makes it look more like a monitor or bedroom TV. This makes sense as LG markets it directly to gamers and those living in smaller spaces. We could spend a good few thousand words next on the myriad picture adjustments provided within Philips convoluted menu system. It really does feel like Philips has given you control over, well, everything. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, though, we’ll limit ourselves to saying that while enthusiasts may embrace and enjoy exploring the huge range of adjustments the 55OLED807 carries, it can all be a bit intimidating to more regular folk. The new Fast Motion Clarity feature has only been announced for the OLED 800 series, but it serves to avoid the motion blurring effect for a gradual transition from one image to the next. Anti burn-in solution on more OLEDsPhilips uses the Android smart TV platform across its TV range, with 2021 models getting the latest Android 10 iteration. It’s the most common TV platform and the most unremarkable – though Android’s stability issues have generally improved over the past couple of years, thanks to updates from Google. So, does the Philips 65-inch OLED807 offer up the image quality goods to compete as an ‘A’ brand in today’s TV market? Let’s find out… Crucially, outside of the spectacular but occasionally forced-looking Crystal Clear preset, there’s nothing gaudy or forced about the OLED807’s new brightness and colour achievements. The P5 processor deploys the extra capabilities of the new EX display with enough finesse and experience to ensure that it delivers nothing but positive outcomes. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits)

That said, there's no reason to be majorly alarmed: while Google TV is an improvement over Android TV in terms of usability, its feature set is more or less the same. What's more, it essentially goes on top of Android TV 10, so there's no reason that Philips couldn't make it available as a software update if its TVs don't launch with it pre-installed. Philips 2021 TV range breakdown The 9206 is armed with a 100Hz VA panel for wide viewing angles. It features Philips’ Micro Dimming Pro system, but we’d expect the performance is less impactful than the Mini LEDs. That’ll likely be true of the picture engine too, which loses the AI processing and the ability to upscale SDR images to HDR. So, what do we know about the set itself? It will feature a "razor thin, zero bezel" design, keeping things sleek and focused on the picture itself. Unlike the OLED 856, which comes with a "wedge mount metal dark chrome T bar stand", the OLED 806 will feature a rather ordinary pair of feet to balance it on a counter. Advancements over the 2020 OLED+935 include HDMI 2.1 capability that makes this OLED better suited for gaming, while the OS is Android TV 10 (no confirmation as to whether Google TV is coming yet). How big it is: Size really does matter with TVs. Are you looking for a cinema-like experience in your lounge? Then you need to get the biggest OLED TV you can afford. If your budget is limited, it might even be worth sacrificing a little bit of picture quality and some next-gen features for a few extra inches of screen real estate. The most widely used panels are those with 6, 8, and 10 bits for each of the RGB components of the pixel. They provide 18-, 24-, and 30-bit color, respectively. Switching to Movie mode does hamper the directness and projection of dialogue, and the speaker system isn’t quite crisp and clean enough to maintain complete control at particularly cacophonous moments, but for an integrated sound solution at this level, it’s good. You should still budget for a soundbar or home cinema system if you’re able to, though. Verdict
