Alcyone is a blue-white star of spectral type B5IIIe, indicating that emission lines are present in its spectrum. Alcyone has surface average temperatures of 12,258 K or 2.2 times hotter than our Sun’s.
Alkyóne comes from alkyón ( ἀλκυών), which refers to a sea-bird with a mournful song [2] or to a kingfisher bird in particular. [3] The meaning(s) of the words is uncertain because alkyón is considered to be of pre- Greek, non- Indo-European origin. [4] However, folk etymology related them to the háls ( ἅλς, "brine, sea, salt") and kyéo ( κυέω, "I conceive"). Alkyóne originally is written with a smooth breathing mark, but this false origin beginning with a rough breathing mark (transliterated as the letter H) led to the common misspellings halkyón ( ἁλκυών) and Halkyóne ( Ἁλκυόνη), [5] and thus the name of one of the kingfisher bird genus' in English Halcyon. It is also speculated that Alkyóne is derived from alké ( ἀλκή, "prowess, battle, guard") and onéo ( ὀνέω, from ὀνίνεμι, onínemi, [6] "to help, to please"). [7] The constellation of Taurus, apart from the two mentioned clusters, also has many interesting stars such as Aldebaran, Elnath, and also other fascinating deep-sky objects such as the Crab Nebula, Crystal Ball Nebula, merging galaxies and many more open clusters. Alcyone will continue to exist for many millions of years however, the Pleides star cluster has been studied closely and many computer simulations predict a grim future. Alcyon originated from about 1890 when Edmond Gentil started the manufacture of bicycles in Neuilly, Seine. The Pleiades open cluster is among the closest star clusters to Earth, and one of the brightest in our vicinity. Though the cluster is very bright and easy to find, you may also draw an imaginary line from the stars of Orion’s Belt– Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka – past Aldebaran – and find the cluster.
