Description

Ambilight is a proprietary Philips technology that extends the onscreen action onto the wall around the TV in the form of coloured light. Not only does it look fabulous, it increases perceived contrast and draws the eye more effectively into the action. If you can't tell, we're big fans.

Details are still thin on the ground, but we look forward to testing the system later in the year. Any improvement on this already-excellent feature is surely welcome. Android TV 11 and DTS Play-Fi Approximate width of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the width is calculated from the diagonal and the aspect ratio. Philips has stayed loyal to the Android TV platform for a few years now, so it won't surprise you to hear that the company's 2022 smart TVs get the most recent version – Android TV 11. This features both Google Assistant Built-in, via push to talk on the remote, and Works with Alexa compatibility. The new chip boasts the company's most advanced Ambient Intelligence – tech that monitors the ambient light level within the room and continually adjusts brightness, gamma and colour in real time to ensure that all content looks its best at all times. A new Aurora feature even lets you combine Ambilight with a selection of ‘screen saver’ videos and images, ensuring that your TV could remain an attractive centrepiece to your living room even when you’re not actually watching it… assuming you don't mind the extra energy use. There are actually two game modes: Optimal and Optimal (Auto). The latter mode allows you to enjoy the benefits of VRR. In terms of other gaming features, there’s support for HGiG and Dolby Vision HDR gaming, along with cloud gaming via Geforce Now.

Steve May began his career as a music journalist, writing for weekly Sounds and Record Mirror, under the nom de plume Steve Keaton. His coverage of post punk music was cited in the 2015 British Library exhibition Terror and Wonder: The Gothic Imagination, as a seminal influence on the Goth music scene. Steve covered the early days of home computing and video games for IPC’s Big K magazine and 2000AD, before becoming the editor of What Video magazine, where he documented the first great format war (VHS vs Beta), and nascent developments in home cinema. The OLED807’s smart features are provided by Android TV - the 11th generation of Android TV to be precise. This version of Android TV is far superior to any previous version in its presentation, stability and features, displaying a much greater understanding of how to deliver an interface that’s suited to TVs rather than personal smart devices. It’s still a little dictatorial and low on customisation options, but at least it no longer feels like it was designed to actively put you off using it. The Philips OLED807 certainly has a lot of competition this year - but we’d say it has more than enough unique qualities to stand out from the crowd. Philips has got its Game preset input lag time down for the OLED807 to 15.1ms with 1080p/60Hz feeds. That’s still 5ms or so higher than the fastest results we’ve seen this year, but you’d have to be a more competitive gamer than us for 5ms to make a serious difference to your performance.Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) The Philips 807 makes for an excellent gaming TV thanks to its support for 4K/120Hz high frame rate, ALLM and VRR – including Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium – although, as mentioned earlier, there are only two HDMI 2.1 inputs. It's also worth noting that the new OLED807 is one of the first TVs to support DTS Play-FiHome Theatre. The tech allows you to integrate your TV into a Play-Fi wireless surround speaker system, and use your TV's built-in speakers as a dedicated centre channel. Pretty clever. Philips 2022 TV range breakdown

Gaming is supported by two HDMI 2.1 ports (in addition to two HDMI 2.0 ports), with support for 4K 120Hz and Variable Refresh Rate, plus Auto Low Latency Mode so it switches to its Game Mode when you fire up a console. The percentage of the approximate area, taken by the active part of the screen, to the total front area. The 8007 is Philips' entry-level Ambilight TV for 2022. It offers a 4K 60Hz LED panel, Pixel Precise Ultra HD processing and three-sided Ambilight. The unexpectedly bright look to the 55OLED907’s pictures feeds into its colour performance, too, helping it produce a gorgeously intense and rich palette that instantly refutes the idea that WOLED TVs inevitably have to look desaturated when they’re running brightly. In fact, in the 55OLED907’s most aggressive Crystal Clear picture setting some colours can actually feel a little over-saturated.
