We found it was really important to use a coarser grind when making longer drinks to avoid excessive bitterness. There are five settings available for grind size, which was good but you have to access the grinder dial via the side panel which was cumbersome. As it stands, the Melitta Avanza Series 600 is just inflexible, so it would suit someone who doesn’t want steamed milk that often. Once you’ve finished with the milk hose, you have to find somewhere to put it without dripping milk everywhere. It’s a shame that this coffee machine doesn’t have the same hose holder built into the drip tray as Melitta’s more expensive machines. Maintenance The machine comes with a 1.5 litre water tank (that’s enough for 7 long coffees) and has the capacity to make two drinks at once thanks to its two centrally positioned spouts. There are a couple of minor omissions from the machine, which probably helped Melitta achieve its super-slim design. It has a 15 bar pressure pump, which is coffee-talk for ‘you’ll get a shot of espresso with a rich and creamy crema every time’. With a sleek and slim design, it also won’t take up all your counter space.

Stylish Design

The only downsides to this machine are that you have to buy Nespresso-compatible pods which is a bit of a pain in the bum and I’d also say that the Vertuo kind of produces a little bit too much foam although, fortunately, that doesn’t really detract from the taste. Milk Frothing Ability : If you love a latte or cappuccino ( and who doesn’t? ) your espresso machine should also have the ability to froth milk to the perfect consistency. No froth, no latte. Straight of the box we were pleasantly surprised to see just how compact this machine is. Unlike many other bean to cup machines the Avanza comes in at a 353 x 200 x 455mm. Those dimensions combined make it a perfect size to have on any countertop without it looking overbearing. Usability

One minor gripe might be the time it takes to get a coffee. From a standing start after turning the machine on, it took us over a minute to get the first espresso.
