About this deal

It kind of reminds me of the time I went to Cedar Point amusement park on the one day of the year all the mayflies hatch. You could see big clouds of them roiling in the air, and sometimes while on the roller coasters, you would zoom through the swarms at 75 mph. So, keep that mouth closed. Might want to shut your eyes too. Ask your student if he notices anything special about this story and the way it reads (it’s written in couplets– rhyming words at the end of two successive lines). List some of the rhyming words and see if you can think of MORE words that rhyme with those words. Many readers will be intrigued by the unique artwork in this book. The author, a university professor who taught the art of illustration for 45 years, has an interesting take on illustration as an art form.

Re-watch ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Consider how each character felt during the story and reflect on how that influenced their behaviour. OMG! How have I not known about this book? This is a story about giant food and it beat 'Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs' by 4 years. This book enchanted me and has been soaked in Cupids arrow juice for I fell in love with this story. It is so cute, so whimsical, and surreal. As a kid, I was pretty much fascinated with any book that had giant, colorful pictures of food, so it only makes sense that my two favorites were Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and this, The Giant Jam Sandwich. Despite the more varied foodstuffs on display in the former, I have to give the edge to the latter, because it actually showed people making the giant food instead of just being pelted with it from above. Kids like to know the process, I guess. Illustration does not yearn for the high cultural plane. It is a modest activity and it is not esoteric, nor is it a mere dumbing-down of art; it has its own distinct purpose. Fine art is allowed to be obscure and bewildering, but illustration is not; its purpose is to enlighten. It is art, but it’s an accessible art. In a nutshell, illustration is the art of the people.

There’s a new bug killer in town, and it comes in the form of a massive jam sandwich. That’s the premise of The Giant Jam Sandwich ( public library) , a hilarious children’s book that chronicles an epic battle between man and insect with a larger-than-life solution. This one-of-a-kind story by author and illustrator John Vernon Lord captures the imagination of children and adults alike, and the quirky illustrations are quite unlike anything in modern children’s literature. Where did the outlandish idea for this extraordinary story come from? The author explained in an interview that he came up with it while on a picnic with his family and friends.

Place the biscuits on two or three baking sheets lined with baking parchment and, using the end of a paintbrush, make a pattern all around the edges. Rest in the fridge or at room temperature for about 30 minutes. You were a student of John Vernon Lord’s when he led the School of Design at Brighton University. What was that like? Curriculum

Premise/plot: I would NOT want to be in Itching Down when FOUR MILLION wasps flew into town. I wouldn't want to be there for even ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND wasps. Would you? This classic picture book is told in rhyme. Though the situation is far from ideal, the text is DELIGHTFUL. They called a meeting in the village hall, and Mayor Muddlenut asked them all, “What can we do?” And they said, “Good question!” But nobody had a good suggestion. In a large bowl, sift the Homepride flour, cornflour and icing sugar together. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles crumbs. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract. The story — which will sound familiar to anyone who has been bothered by wasps during a picnic — starts one hot summer day in the town of Itching Down when “four million wasps flew into town.” The town’s citizens, unnerved by the rapid infestation, start looking for a way to get rid of the wasps. Meanwhile, high above the field, six flying machines whirred and wheeled, ready for the wasps to take the bait. And then there was nothing to do but wait.

What do wasps like best to eat? Strawberry jam! Now wait a minute! If we made a giant sandwich we could trap them in it!” If you are using jam and it is not smooth, warm it slightly in a small pain, then press through a sieve to remove any lumps. Let it cool completely. Spread 2 tbsp jam on to each of the whole biscuits, and dust those with heart-shaped holes with icing sugar. Helicopters lift the other slice into the sky and wait for the wasps to land on the jam. When the wasps finally fly in, the helicopters drop the slice and trap the wasps in the sandwich. The story ends with nearly all of the wasps squished in the giant jam sandwich. The jam sandwich bit was a notion that when I was young, my dad, if we ever had a picnic, always used to put some strawberry jam away from the picnic to attract wasps from where we were settled. A lot of ideas are anecdotes from your own life; you can exploit them and bring them into fantasy. John Vernon Lord (Photograph: ONCA)The other slice came down — kersplat! — on top of the wasps, and that was that. There were only three that got away, and where they are now I cannot say. This book is an entertaining read with detailed illustrations, extensive vocabulary and rhyming couplets, useful for upper KS1 and lower KS2 children, who will appreciate the colourful images, rhythmic pattern and creative narrative.

Wednesday: Read The Giant Jam Sandwich. Notice it includes pairs of rhyming words that are at the end of each line. Read the book again encouraging children to join-in and read the rhyming words. Identify if children like sandwiches and the fillings they like most/ least. Encourage children to use descriptive language, e.g. I love ham sandwiches cut into small triangles made by my granny. My thoughts: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one. It is so much fun. I love the rhythm and rhyme of it. From cover to cover it just works. Not all books written in rhyme do work. Some seem to struggle a bit here and there. This one is practically perfect in every way. Cut out three circles at a time using a 15cm baking tin or plate as a guide. Repeat with the remaning dough. Cut a heart shape from the centre of three of the biscuits. Can your student remember some of the different ways the people worked together to get rid of those pesky wasps? Could one man have done this job alone? No way! Not even ten men could’ve done this job alone; it took everyone working together including those who:
