Lawton believes the studio wanted a happy ending in particular because Gere and Roberts were being courted for the lead roles. “They had auditioned Al Pacino, they had auditioned Michelle Pfeiffer, and it would definitely have been a different movie if had it been Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer,” he says. “It might have been closer to the original script and maybe not have had a happy ending.
