About this deal

The resulting book, Rules for a Knight — in reality, a work of fiction — began over a decade ago. Why a book about knights? Hawke explains: It’s difficult to explain, but in some ways it can be easy to be supportive when your friend is hurt or sad. You may find it is more challenging to be wholeheartedly supportive when extreme good fortune befalls a friend and not you. Like a dead branch falling from a tree, which then decomposes and nourishes the soil, your disappointments can transform into the elements of change and growth.

In the US, where the book was acquired earlier this summer, Rules for a Knight has been pitched as a title for young adults. Hawke told the Wall Street Journal that he wrote it for his own four children because “it becomes fairly difficult to talk about ethics with kids without sounding like you’re preaching” and “I started wanting to talk to my kids about what I believe in and it became easier to do it in a fictional way.” The quality of your life will, to a large extent, be decided by with whom you elect to spend your time. All living things rely on each other. If there were no earthworms, the soil would be depleted, grow no food, and we would die. Understanding that he relies on all that surrounds him, a knight is kind above all. He knows he will need many friends. Proper manners are not trivial. Being polite is part of our daily meditation on the equality of mankind. The medieval period was also known for violence and death, thus it was also called the Dark Ages. Knights were expected to have the strength and skills to face combat but they must also know how to temper their aggressive side with chivalrous acts” Horsemanship—virtually every task I can think of is aided by an awareness of breath. It is the connective tissue of the universe, binding all living creatures together. By focusing on our breath, we are able to more adeptly inhabit our bodies and function on instinct. Habit, routine, and too much consistency numb our minds and pave the road for us to sleepwalk through life.” Publishing director Jocasta Hamilton said the book was “executed with wit and elegance”, describing it as “a parable for all ages which has the potential to become a classic”. “With the appeal of an Arthurian legend and the economy of Aesop, it draws on eastern and western philosophy and literature. I think we all need to be reminded, as well as taught, how to live.”

Equality– Thomas remembers the first time he heard "The Ballad of the Forty-Four-Pointed Red Deer." The story's very ambiguity steadily feeds its mysteriousness and power, and Danielewski's mastery of postmodernist and cinema-derived rhetoric up the ante continuously, and stunningly. One of the most impressive excursions into the supernatural in many a year. An imagined father, Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke, wrote a letter to his children outlining the Rules for a Knight, in 1483, a night before he went to the Battle of Slaughter Bridge, where he was among those killed. He had foreseen this outcome and as a result had written the letter, which contain life lessons he wished to pass along to his children. You were born owning nothing and with nothing you will pass out of this life. Be frugal and you can be generous.Knights all throughout the middle ages had made several kinds of vows. Most of these vows revolved around the common concept which was chivalry. The only intelligent response to the ongoing gift of life is gratitude. For all that has been, a knight says, “Thank you.” For all that is to come, a knight says, “Yes!” Gratitude– a young Thomas suffers from a toothache and complains constantly, annoying his grandfather. When winter comes, young Hawke complains of the cold. His grandfather reminds him that at least his tooth no longer bothers him.

Equality: Every knight holds human equality as an unwavering truth. A knight is never present when men or women are being degraded or compromised in any way, because if a knight were present, those committing the hurtful acts or words would be made to stop. When seeking the wisdom and clarity of your own mind, silence is a helpful tool. The voice of our spirit is gentle and cannot be heard when it has to compete with others. Just as it is impossible to see your reflection in troubled water, so too is it with the soul. Dedication– Thomas recounts the famous battle of Caal, in which the people of Caal escaped thanks to the ingenuity of their knights.

During the 14th century, the Duke of Burgundy broke the Knights Code of Chivalry into several virtues. These virtues included the following: I’ve just always loved the idea of knighthood, it makes being a good person cool. Or, aspiring to be a good person cool.” —Ethan Hawke. The tale related in Faith is also very similar to the Buddhist story of Kisa Gotami. The book is divided into a preface, 20 subsections, and an end poem. Each of the 20 middle sections focuses on a different value or virtue explained in a short tale.
