A big nope from me. Introduced as Smithy’s new girlfriend in the 2019 Christmas special, no one’s supposed to like Sonia anyway. But I don’t think she even succeeds on that level… She’s just pointless. This special should have just had Smithy and Nessa together, or at least both single and they get together over the course of the special. Sonia enters the game too late. Flop. Jason Nessa: “I just can’t believe this, Stace. Of all the people I’ve slept with it’s him gets me pregnant. Not Nigel Havers, not John Prescott, not any of Goldie Lookin Chain. No, some knobhead from Essex.”
The brilliance of Doris is the show never overuses her. She comes when she comes, has an iconic scene and leaves us gagging for more. Whether she’s flipping off Jean at the barn dance, “where’s the salad”-ing or singing a timeless rendition of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out – Doris is perfect. Rest in peace to a sex positive icon. Dawn and Pete There are unseen sexual tensions between him and Nessa; they have had several one-night-stands (one of which produced their son), and in some ways, he seems to fancy Nessa. He always seems a bit gutted when she and Dave start dating, especially as he seems to be acting like Baby Neil's father. Relationships can go any number of different ways, and Gavin & Stacey’s biggest strength is in showing us the whole gamut of possibilities. Not just in the contrast between Gavin’s love life and Smithy’s, but also in the romantic entanglements of the supporting characters. After all, lots of shows have nice ideas and good actors, but very few of them ignite the nation’s interest to such a degree that two characters get to make a number one single with Tom Jones, while another gets to coach the England football team in a Comic Relief sketch. This is a show that almost everybody seemed to love, and I think a big part of that is the human drama at its core. As the show progressed, it spent more and more time in this central section where laughs meet big topics. In series one, Gavin and Stacey’s relationship showed us the ideal romantic timeline of dating, engagement and marriage. Meanwhile, Nessa and Smithy showed us the less glossy alternative: one night stand with someone you don’t even claim to like, awkwardly trying to avoid each other, unplanned pregnancy. Smithy is 28 and he is a self-employed builder and decorator. He is very protective of Gavin—he is disappointed when Gavin gets engaged to Stacey and when Gavin and Stacey go on a honeymoon, he calls Gavin every day for the three weeks they are there, and gets angry at Gavin for leaving his phone off. He loves Gavin's parents more than his own and has an unseen girlfriend called Lucy, who, according to Smithy, is seventeen and three-quarter years old. OH! Simply put, Nessa IS Gavin and Stacey. Ruth Jones’ writing is perfect, her characterisation golden. I love that the show just gets more and more surreal with Nessa’s random anecdotes and history. Her life could have 80 million spin-offs and all would be fascinating. Noel from Hear’Say and John Prescott at her and Dave’s wedding will never not be funny. Pam So yes, Gavin & Stacey has a strong premise, quotable lines, engaging characters and top performances throughout. But, truth be told, I don’t think these are the only reasons that the show was so popular. Finally, Sheridan Smith is a series regular as Smithy's younger sister Ruth "Rudi" Smith. She's immature but kind and also likes to be called Smithy. How many seasons of Gavin and Stacey are available?Bryn: “It is, Gavin, it is, provided you remember the one golden rule, and I’ll tell you what, it took me a while to get my head round it.
