About this deal

How rarely do we come across the really frightening ghost story now. Kingsley Amis's The Green Man was a rare and honourable exception, and Amis followed the classic pattern of earlier writers, letting the story progress carefully from a recognisable normality, through unease, to the rapid unfolding of horror that marks out the most successful and scarifying of all horror story writers. While other characters cannot believe in the ghost, the intensity of Maurice’s belief invites the reader to suspend that disbelief. Amis eases his readers into an acceptance of the supernatural by means of a variety of elements: the common sense and worldly character of the narrator, the characterization of the guests, the skillful use of incidental details to create the air of reality. People eat, drink, argue, reconcile, read, share, and make love with little or no expectation that anything out of the ordinary will (or can) happen.

Amis is widely known as a comic novelist of life in mid- to late-20th-century Britain, but his literary work covered many genres – poetry, essays, criticism, short stories, food and drink, anthologies, and several novels in genres such as science fiction and mystery. His career initially developed in an inverse pattern to that of his close friend Philip Larkin. Before becoming known as a poet, Larkin had published two novels; Amis originally sought to be a poet and turned to novels only after publishing several volumes of verse. He continued throughout his career to write poetry in a straightforward, accessible style that often masks a nuance of thought. I think this book is a perfect ghost story, with everything that is supposed to be there, there, per tradition. I Like It Here (1958) takes a contemptuous view of "abroad", after Amis's own travels on the Continent with a young family. Take a Girl Like You (1960) steps away from the immediately autobiographical, but remains grounded in the concerns of sex and love in ordinary modern life, tracing a young schoolmaster's courtship and ultimate seduction of the heroine. And did I say the main character is an alcoholic? In fact, I’ll call this one of the “alcoholic novels,” like Under the Volcano by Malcom Lowry. Here are a couple of lines:

What makes The Green Man readable and re-readable is the skill with which Amis, like Henry James before him, turns the narrative screw. It is, quite simply, a rattling good ghost story. I got the feeling in The Green Man that Amis was so enamoured with the character of Maurice Allington he forgot he was writing a ghost story. In 1940, the Amises moved to Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and Amis (like his father before him) won a scholarship to the City of London School. [10] In April 1941, after his first year, he was admitted on a scholarship to St John's College, Oxford, where he read English. There he met Philip Larkin, with whom he formed the most important friendship of his life. [11] In 2008, The Times ranked Amis 13th on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. I was thinking about it and I think we have Emily Brontë to blame for this. Heathcliff was trying to kill a dog and everybody knows he's a most villainous villain ( el malo malísimo), and since Emily's book became such a great influence for literature and cinema, now every time an author wants to show us that somebody is evil without sacrificing one of the main characters, an animal is fictionally murdered. It's ironic that Emily actually loved dogs and that dog in 'Wuthering Heights' survived. I might be wrong, of course (about the influence bit, not about the dogs bit).Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Amis regularly produced essays and criticism, principally for periodical publication. Some were collected in 1968 into What Became of Jane Austen? and Other Essays, in which Amis's wit and literary and social opinions were displayed on books such as Colin Wilson's The Outsider (panned), Iris Murdoch's début novel Under the Net (praised), and William Empson's Milton's God (inclined to agreement). Amis's opinions on books and people tended to appear, and often were, conservative, and yet, as the title essay of the collection shows, he was not merely reverent of "the classics" and of traditional morals, but more disposed to exercise his own rather independent judgement in all things. I do think it's really difficult to right one without it sounding awkward, though.I first heard about this novel from PD James' semi-autobiography/memoir, 'Time To Be In Earnest,' which I recently read. She mentions 'The Green Man' as an excellent horror story, so I looked it up, found ONE copy only in my entire library system and borrowed it. Here goes... As he says, “I honestly can’t see why everybody who isn’t a child, everybody who’s theoretically old enough to have understood what death means, doesn’t spend all his time thinking about it. It’s a pretty arresting thought.” He also happens to own and run a country inn that is haunted. The Green Man opens as Maurice’s father drops dead (had he seen something in the room?) and continues as friends and family convene for the funeral.
