About this deal

The system is not the oldest underground railway in Glasgow: that distinction belongs to a three-mile (five-kilometre) section of the Glasgow City and District Railway opened in 1886, now part of the North Clyde Line of the suburban railway network, which runs in a tunnel under the city centre between High Street and west of Charing Cross. Another major section of underground suburban railway line in Glasgow is the Argyle Line, which was formerly part of the Glasgow Central Railway. A collision under the Clyde". Yorkshire Evening Post. England. 15 December 1896 . Retrieved 4 February 2017– via British Newspaper Archive. The Glasgow subway is quite small, and since it has never been expanded, it has fallen short and does not supply all needs for public transport within the city. Because of this, it has become increasingly important that it be connected to other forms of transport, namely the suburban and intercity trains, as well as the bus lines. It was not until the aforementioned renovation of 1977 that any formal connections with other transports were made. The line is located near and around the central part of the city, and is divided by the Clyde river. In the northern side there are 8 stations, while the 7 remaining are positioned on the southern side of the river. The stations are:

Parking lots are available as a means of reducing car traffic within the city centre and encourage travel by subway. Currently, there are three such installations. In August 1977, all redundant fittings and equipment from the old system were sold at a public sale at Broomloan Works. During the 1977–1980 modernisation, two Clayton battery locomotives were used by the contractors Taylor Woodrow to haul construction trains. [23] The trains lost their original plum and cream-coloured liveries, being painted red and white instead. From the 1950s the trains became all red—in a shade similar to that of London buses. During the early 1970s, trailer carriage number 41 was repainted in the original 1896 livery. Those attempting a Subcrawl may wish to visit all fifteen bars for a journey of contrasts revealing a myriad of local peculiarities. Electrification: In 1935, the Glasgow Subway underwent a significant transformation when it was electrified. Electric traction replaced the steam locomotives, resulting in a more efficient and cleaner mode of transportation. Original System: The original Glasgow Subway system consisted of a circular route, known as the Inner Circle, with two tunnels running in parallel. The tunnels were constructed using the cut-and-cover method, and the trains were initially steam-powered. Before the 1970s modernisation, the Subway offered no formal connections to other transport at ground level, although in practice two stations, Merkland Street and Buchanan Street, were only a short walk from British Rail stations. West Street: West Street Station is situated near the Glasgow School of Art and the famous Sauchiehall Street. It serves as a gateway to the vibrant city center and is close to various restaurants, bars, and shops. Formerly known as Copland Road until 1977, it serves the district of Ibrox. The Ibrox Stadium is located close to this station. The same afternoon that it was inaugurated, a wagon crashed into another as they crossed the tunnel beneath the Clyde river. As a result, the system was closed until the next month. Four people were injured in the incident.
