About this deal

You have the traditional oil-based gloss, which turns yellow over time. Water-based gloss, which stays white forever, but generally leaves a substandard finish. Then hybrid gloss, which is a compromise between oil and water.

Many people do prefer a water-based gloss paint rather than than oil-based formulations. This is because while oil-based gloss paints were traditionally much higher quality, water-based technology has caught up, meaning that you can achieve the finish of an oil-based paint with the fast drying and non-yellowing of a water-based paint. When painting an interior wall, start by 'cutting in' the paint around the edges of the wall. This can be done free-hand or you can apply masking tape if you are a less confident painter. Once you have painted all of the edges, you can then fill in the rest of the wall using a roller. We highly recommend getting a 4" mini roller in the same roller sleeve that you use on the wall. This is because you can use the mini roller to paint all the way up to the edge of the wall. This prevents what is known as the 'framing effect' which is caused by a paint brush being used around the edge and a roller being used on the main bulk of the wall, resulting in an uneven finish. Second is to make your brush slightly wet with water from time to time, so having a scuttle or mug with a little of water will be useful. It makes the gloss flow a lot easier. Just make sure to not do it too often, or too much water, as this gloss run like water anyway. The Porcelain White felt quite stiff when used straight out of the tube, it needed some handling to start moving smoothly and held marks to a reasonable extent. It became quite translucent when mixed with a solvent. The best satinwood paint you can buy in 2023 1. Crown Solo One Coat Satin Paint: The best one coat satinwood paint Because it’s water-based, this paint will also never yellow with age, making it a perfect paint for any areas that might not get a lot of sunlight, such as skirting boards behind furniture and the inside of cupboards. It also comes in a great range of colours, although mostly pastel or neutral shades.

Grease and Stains – Cooking grease, food stains, and drink spills can turn white paint to yellow. If you spill drink or grease over paint and don’t wipe it off immediately, the colorants in the grease will stain the paint and make it yellow. Williamsburg Porcelain White is based on a new pigment (for Williamsburg), PW 5, it is a complex co-precipitate of barium sulfate and zinc sulfide more commonly known as Lithopone. This Dulux paint will usually only need one or two coats, and is ready to recoat after six hours, meaning you can easily complete a decent-sized painting project in under a day. Cleaning up is a cinch, too. Given the great sheen and decent coverage, you may be surprised to hear that this satinwood paint is actually water-based, meaning brushes and rollers can be cleaned with just soapy water. It feels as though Johnstone’s Aqua gloss has much more oil in it than Teknos Futura 90. You cannot simply wash a brush out with clean water, as you would with other systems. Instead, you should start off with water, then finish washing out with a product called Clean Spirit. Durability - typically, oil-based paints are more durable, allowing more resistance to wear and tearThe reality of all paint brands is that the quality varies from paint to paint. While some paints may be excellent in colours, some perform better in a white shade. Due to the susceptibility of oil-based paints to yellow, finding the one that minimises yellowing is crucial if you are using a white oil-based gloss. Water-based or hybrid gloss products are a bit different. You need a synthetic brush, capable of holding its shape for prolonged periods. There is no point opting for an overly soft bristles either, or you will struggle. I’d suggest the Hamilton Prestige Synthetic Brush, which gives you everything you need at a reasonable price. Available online here. But let’s not get too bogged down with the science of paint. All I want to do in this blog, is talk about what I think are the three best white gloss products on the market. I can only go off my personal experience, so I apologise if your favourite isn’t on the list. However, I am a massive product geek, so I have tried a large proportion of the gloss paints that are available. However, water-based paints tend to yellow less than oil-based paint. That’s because water-based paint doesn’t have oily deposits and uses water as its solvent. On the other hand, oil-based paint has lots of oily deposits and uses oil as its solvent. If you are looking for an excellent quality trade paint that won't break the bank, you can always count of Armstead. The Armstead range always offer fantastic value for money, and when compared with any retail paint that is readily available in large DIY stores, it will beat it hands down.

Wrong Cleaners – If you use the wrong cleaner to clean your paint, the coating will have a yellow time over time. Petroleum-based solvents (mineral spirits) and turpentine will cause a yellowish tint on the paint. Some professional painters and decorators prefer to use white spirit and others swear by methylated spirit. Whatever gives you the best results is the best spirit to use! Can I use white spirit instead of methylated spirit? For oil-based paints, natural bristle brushes are the best to use. For water-based paints, you must use a synthetic bristle brush as natural bristle paint brushes absorb moisture and therefore will not apply a water-based paint properly.

Satinwood paints can either be oil- or water-based. While both can be used for most jobs, it’s always worth reading the tin to make sure the paint you’ve chosen is suitable for what you have in mind. Matt - the 'flattest' finish of paint which is offers a very popular modern finish, although it has low durability which is why it is used on walls & ceilings in low-traffic rooms

Advantages of Porcelain White

Eggshell paints are closer in sheen to satinwood, but are a little more matte. Again, these are better suited to walls and ceilings as they aren’t as durable as satinwood. What do I need to consider when choosing a satinwood paint? For such a great paint, it’s disappointing that it doesn’t come in any colours other than the standard pure brilliant white. But the elegant, soft mid-sheen and almost velvety-looking finish make it perfect for any home. It’s oil-based, so brushes will need to be cleaned with brush cleaner, and as with all oil-based paints, you should also make sure you keep the area well ventilated while painting and drying. After it’s fully dry, any future scuff marks or stains can be cleaned off without damaging the paint, making it perfect for high-traffic areas. Yes, of course. As we said above, white spirit and methylated spirit are used interchangeably in the painting and decorating world. Although some pros have a favourite, that is just a personal preference. It can be applied with either a paint brush or a foam roller, and getting a smooth surface with no streaks or drips is easy, even for beginners. Although it should always be applied in a well-ventilated area, it has a much weaker odour than other oil-based satinwood paints. Modern synthetic paintbrushes are of little use to apply oil-based gloss. You also need a certain type of roller. So, I thought I’d include a little section on the best brush and roller to go for.
