About this deal

One of the most infamous events that has been scratched into the paranormal record disc of the castle was the shanking of Sir Fulke Greville. Fulke was gifted the castle by King James I in 1604 and restored the shattered ruin of a castle into a glamorous palace filled with rich food, extravagant furniture and lavish wines. The castle has seen so many rulers, owners, and restorations so now it’s a combination of all the centuries in one place. You can climb on 14th-century ramparts, walk through 17th-century state rooms, and learn about modern-day conservation in their bird sanctuaries and gardens. The autobiography of Anne’s eldest son and heir mentions the fact that his mother had an interest in ghosts; He seemed to be trying to tell her of a hidden item in the castle however it seems she was not able to locate it. And the mournful wails of a distraught woman believed to have been walled up with her infant is still heard two centuries after the unspeakable act.

For two weeks, visitors are entertained by a variety of spooky shows, creepy games and spine tingling ghost stories. The Castle Dungeon is not suitable for people with claustrophobia due to the enclosed space, narrow pathways and small rooms Again, we don't want to give too much away for any of the horror mazes for those heading to the event later this week. The Power at work is not that of the mortals in the Castle of here. The Spirit of my called Edward Jameson is one of these who now haunt the place… Coombe Abbey Hotel was originally built in the 12 th century as a monastery and it is as spooky as you might expect from such an old building! Guests choosing to spend the night here may find themselves face to face with either a hooded monk or a young green eyed girl! This story was then routinely revived in the 1960s by his son David, Lord Brooke, especially in the press and magazines promoting visitors to the castle. 3 It is perhaps no coincidence that these ghostly tales coincided with the sale of Sir Fulke Greville’s manuscripts to the British Library in 1968, and when scholars reignited interest in Greville’s life, poetry and writings (Joan Rees’s seminal book on Sir Fulke was published in 1971, for example). It was during the ownership of Lord Brooke in 1973 that the rooms of the Watergate Tower, suitably re-named the ‘Ghost Tower’, were opened to the public for the first time. The atmospheric oak panelling of these rooms, which lends them a Jacobean flavour, was installed in the 18th century and re-arranged in its present condition during the 1850s-1860s due to work undertaken by architect Anthony Salvin. The eventual installation of Sir Fulke’s portrait and seventeenth century furniture in these rooms would complete this vision, a relic to accompany the miracle of his ghost. Needless to say, a documentary report published in 1996 concluded that “Although little trace of Fulke Greville’s alterations survive in the tower, … it is unlikely that he ever lived in it…” 4 More recent representations Here you can find all the royal guests as waxworks including the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) and Winston Churchill.

Greville served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1614 to 1621. He was later raised to the peerage as Baron Brooke and then The Dead Centre Stage in the courtyard was constantly busy with DJs, bands and dancers on stage at every moment. It felt more like a party atmosphere. And those creepy characters which strolled round seemed even more creepy in the dark. There have also been numerous reports of a pair of ghostly monks who have been seen walking throughout the hotel. There have also been incidents where two phantom priests were seen in the hotel’s courtyard. The reception area is said to be haunted by a group of small girls who are often heard giggling or laughing despite the fact that there is nobody there. Finally, there is also the apparition of a young stable boy who is usually accompanied by an absolutely foul stench.

In the 13th century, a stone castle is made in place of a wooden one and by the 14th century, many of the towers and ramparts we see today are built. We arrived bright and early on Saturday morning ready to experience their The Haunted Castle event. This event is running daily until October 31 and is suitable for all the family.
