About this deal

To get this into a form which you can use to dye your hair, you have to first of all turn it into a powder, which I do by grating it (Yes, with a cheese grater…):

The color. Holy mother, the color. I expected to be more of a ginger, but this stuff delivers. Deep, fiery, radiant wine red. My hair is pretty dark and I was worried after I got out of the shower, but once it started to dry? Man, oh man. Awesome. I’ve also noticed that the only articles of clothing that remained stained by the run-off from my hair were the shirt I was wearing when I applied this stuff and one small section of the towel I used to dry my hair after rinsing the henna out. Of these, I found than none covered the greys at my temples (Lush themselves advise that only Rouge will do this), even when mixed with Rouge. Brun and Marron didn’t make much difference on their own, but came out too dark when mixed with Rouge, and as for Venetien, it made absolutely no difference at all, even when left on for six hours. Will I be using Lush henna hair dye again, then? Then, using a comb, select a section at the top of your head and apply henna thoroughly using the paintbrush. Press paintbrush against the roots repeatedly, while avoiding facial skin. “Paint” henna into the entire section of hair to the tips. Pin finished sections up and apply to all hair. I’m surprised at how many five stars this product has gotten. This is not my first time using henna on hair but it has been many years, and I was so excited to do a burgundy. One pro to this product was that I felt it was conditioning. However, I have the following cons: I love it! I have gotten so many compliments on my hair, plus it almost matches my ginger sibling’s natural red hair color! You will often find henna artists at fairs and festivals and henna tattoos are a popular holiday memory. Henna contains a pigment called lawsone that has an affinity to the keratin in your hair. It adheres to the cuticle, adding a layer of sheer colour without changing your natural hair colour. This will very gradually fade over time. Henna can be used to help bind other materials to the hair like the hibiscus in Rouge, which brings added depth and vibrancy to your colour. We add cocoa butter because it softens and aids slip through the hair as you apply and enables us to make a solid, self-preserving product. Additionally, dying the beard using henna is considered sunnah in Islamic tradition – practices of the Islamic prophet Muhammad that are used as a model for Muslims to follow. I have been recently switching to all natural and cruelty-free stuff, and beginning to go vegan which is such a healthful way and shows compassion completely to animals (anything for them!), and I think it kind of starting with looking for an organic hair dye. Yep, i’ve been doing extensive research. And this was a great start. I even went and got organic shampoo, which was a great pre-wash before using this dye.

The only complaint is that the water will always run orange after washing your hair. I’m used to it now and all my towels are dark and I never wear light clothes when my hair is air drying because it would leave orange on the clothes and if I go to the beach swimming my hair will be dripping wet orange color. That’s the only thing. But you can wash it off your clothes with just water. Henna doesn’t stain permanently so it’s not a big deal.Storage: We recommend you store henna in a cool dark place, fridge or freezer and away from moisture. Put on protective gloves (those latex ones like dentists use are perfect). Henna STAINS everything — if it gets on your skin, your skin will be orange for a day or two. If it gets on the floor, the floor will be also. Eventually it goes away, but if you can’t deal with stains err on the side of caution. Drape floor/counter with drop cloth/old towels. Drape a towel over your shirt or wear something you don’t mind getting stained. To continue our commitment to reduce single use plastic, your henna will no longer come with plastic gloves. Please protect your hands with some trusty reusable rubber gloves. The color will bleed. Sometimes, for several weeks. white/ light colored pillowcases, towels, and shirts will get stained. Oxygen bleach works great for washable fabrics.

Ensure you’re buying good quality henna. I bought my henna online (the brand was Light Mountain Natural). I’m not going to lie, this is an absolute pain in the ass, and seems to take forever. Lush recently changed the formula of their henna hair dye to make it a little softer, but having to prepare it is still a faff I could definitely do without, and one of the biggest disadvantages of it, as far as I’m concerned. I used henna before in my hair – I agree with all the info provided here, including you can use henna (ONLY body art quality, pure henna with no additives) over dyed hair, and you can dye over it. Most hair stylists have been taught to NEVER do this, as “hair” henna can contain metallic salts that have a chemical reaction to the dye turning your hair green. If you are sure of your henna quality (I can vouch for the shop linked here – same people run hennaforhair.com) then ignore them 😛 To this end, I started experimenting with hair dyes. The only one I found which came even remotely close to teh shade of natural red hair (or “ginger” as some people persist in calling it…) was Clairol Nice N’ Easy in 8WR – Golden Auburn. (Buy it here) A lot of these natural dye mixes bleed for a long time (mine still bled after 1 month of application — watch out when you sweat or if you get caught in the rain) — the bleeding would be worth living with if the color was good.

Hairdressers hate it. I’ve personally used chemical dyes over henna without any issues, but that only applies to PURE henna, with absolutely no artificial additives. A lot of hairdressers won’t touch hair that’s previously been dyed with henna, purely because they have no way of knowing how it will react to the dye, so if you think you might want to use regular dye in the future, you’re going to have to tread very carefully. Mid-tone hair colors, such as dirty blonde and light brown, typically turn a richer, almost auburn shade.

My only concern is that two weeks later, my hair still bleeds a lot in the shower (it seems to be fading very slightly each time, no biggie, I expected it). But what I don’t like is that my wet hair stains anything it touches. I prefer to let my hair air-dry, so laying my head on a pillow while still wet is now off-limits or I have a big orange stain on my pillowcase. Maybe most people blow dry their hair, but I prefer to go to bed with it damp, so it’s definitely been an inconvenience that I did not expect :/ Honestly I’ve never had a bad henna experience, although I’ve only ever used this brand and Lush. I like this brand a million times better. You get far more variety in the color options, it’s way easier, and it actually LASTS! Unlike the Lush products which seemed to fade in like 4 – 6 weeks, at least on me. Since I still have quite a bit of pure henna to finish up, I’ve started to dye my hair twice a month. I’d dye it with pure henna, then color it with wine red. It added nice depth and dimension. Very pretty.

Top 5 Henna Hair Dyes

For me, the main issue I have with Caca Rouge is that, while it works perfectly on the lengths, the hair around my temples is much lighter (It’s always been fairly blonde, but now has a fair few white hairs in there too), and Caca Rogue is much less natural on those lighter hairs – in fact, it turns them a fairly neon shade of orange. No, I won’t be sharing the photos of that… I am very happy, and will be purchasing again. Next time, I want to try to mix the wine red and the regular henna because, hey, why not? After about two weeks, the color has faded/oxidized into a more reddish brown that is visible in warmish/ bright lighting and in normal lighting has some tint/highlights.
