Been putting off this review since July, because sometimes you just like a book too much. I am right about this! Also I'm just really impressed by this book, and I wanted to make sure I did it justice, which is just way too much pressure for a book review. Can't handle that, procrastination is the solution.

A former Bank of England economist, Rachel Reeves was elected to the constituency of Leeds West in 2010 and was a supporter of Ed Miliband in the leadership election of the same year. Miliband made her his shadow chief secretary to the Treasury and subsequently shadow secretary of state for work and pensions, where she made her reputation as a politician willing to outflank the government on traditionally Conservative issues, announcing that Labour would be “tougher” than the Conservatives in cutting benefits. Chinara: Barely a POV character, clearly a badass, would read a whole book about her but her inclusion here feels extraneous. Another policy she has up her sleeve is abolishing tax relief for private schools. She said at conference that the money would be used to pay for “the most ambitious school improvement programme for a generation” and will see thousands more teachers employed to “drive up standards everywhere”. In France, although the formation of a Shadow Cabinet is not compulsory and not common, several Shadow Cabinets have been formed. The former care worker left school without any qualifications and was told she wouldn't amount to anything. Not all opposition frontbenchers are members of the Shadow Cabinet, which is composed of the most senior opposition members (usually around twenty). Shadow chancellor, Anneliese Dodds, has been demoted to become the party chair. She will be replaced by Rachel Reeves, somebody who's been prominent in Labour circles for a long time, not somebody who's identified with the left of the party in any way. The differences in the two major parties’ use of the concept reflect wider truths. The Conservative leader has traditionally been freer to choose whoever they wish for their ‘Consultative Committee’. From Fred Jowett’s ‘Bradford Resolution’ (1914) onwards, Labour has been sceptical of “cabinet government”, and the leader required to observe democratic principles for its ‘Parliamentary Committee’. The elections held at the opening session of every parliament since 1923 (when in opposition) were nevertheless abolished by Ed Miliband in 2011. (Corbyn’s leadership campaign shrewdly flirted with their reintroduction). Shadow Cabinets have been more important for Labour, if for no other reason than that the party has more often had them. Two Shadow Ministers even took to print, in volumes edited by Gerald Kaufman (1983) and John Denham (2012), neither being conspicuously effective in their intention of paving the way for victory.

A related term is the shadow budget, which is often prepared by shadow cabinets (and, when released, usually presented by the shadow finance minister or equivalent) as an alternative to the real budget presented by the government. When prepared and released in an election year, an opposition party's shadow budget will typically form a key part of the party's manifesto, and will be largely if not wholly implemented if the opposition party subsequently forms a government (especially if it wins an outright majority). [ citation needed] Third parties [ edit ] Particularly after Labour had a very patchy set of results with some really tough contests, losing ground to the Tories in many areas that they like to think of as their own. The move was welcomed by Manuel Cortes, general secretary of the TSSA, who said it made “perfect economic sense”, while industry body Rail Partners said the announcement was “not unexpected but still disappointing”. Improved conditions for workers Ashworth tweeted: “It’s been an immense privilege to serve the nation as shadow health secretary these last two years of the pandemic. But in September I passed Robin Cook’s 87-92 record and became the longest serving Labour shadow health secretary in history. It’s right moment for new challenge!"

It's been a busy day for the Labour Party, with a host of post changes in Sir Keir Starmer's top team.
