a b c Cumming, Ed (9 February 2022). "Ben Whishaw shines as spiky, golden-hearted doctor Adam Kay in This Is Going to Hurt". The Independent . Retrieved 5 March 2022. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review. It exposes a lot that is wrong with the NHS, but never loses sight of how truly important it is. It wasn't until I came to live in California that I really understood how fortunate we were. I had lived in a bubble where healthcare was taken for granted as a human right and no one was ever told they couldn't be made better because they were too poor. The realization that some countries allowed people to die preventable deaths shook me to my core. It still does. Initially, her stay was to be 6-months, where she would be completely cut off from the outside world, including from her older sister, Natalie. i also understand that everyone handles grief in different ways, and AK obviously uses humour, but i would have liked a little more seriousness in tone when talking about certain things. i think it would have made the reflections feel more genuine.

Stephanie Wrobel’s “ Darling Rose Gold” was one of my favourite debuts, and I knew it would be a hard one to follow. Wrobel’s newest novel, “This Might Hurt” is calculating, curious and completely unique, full of family dysfunction, in the way we have come to expect from this author. a b c d e "Ben Whishaw cast as lead in BBC Two's adaptation of This Is Going To Hurt with AMC co-producing". AMC Networks. 14 June 2020 . Retrieved 29 May 2021. stars for being a great read and exposing the very emotional side of being a doctor and not just the practice of medicine. Also we can all agree that doctors deserve absolutely every penny they get and are entitled to far more than they're being paid currently. But there's nothing like someone pre-financial crash describing themselves as poor while also having just bought an apartment and a trip to the Mauritius which just aaaargh really gets under my skin.We have three points of view: Natalie, the responsible older sibling, Kit, her younger sister who has left for a wellness retreat on a remote island for six months, and an unknown (at first) female who we are introduced to as a child being abused by her domineering father. It soon becomes apparent as to who this child is, and although those sections were the most difficult to read, they were the most compelling of the story. I found Kit and Natalie to be rather one-dimensional. Kit and Natalie are sisters, and they have pretty different lives. Natalie is a successful business woman. Kit has been having a hard time dealing with things in her life so she decides to go to this unique retreat called Wisewood. It ls on a private island off the coast of Maine, and you learn to be a fearless person while also having no antact with the outside world while you're there. Truthfully, some of the circumstances are difficult to read, so if you feel like you could be sensitive to any plot involving significant mental abuse, and at times physical danger, you may want to proceed with caution. The book had a shaky start and I was not impressed which I actually foresaw. I just didn’t expect that the author’s style is for me from the start but things were going in the right direction and I was intrigued so I continued to give it a chance. a b c "Sister pictures options Adam Kay's book 'This Is Going To Hurt' ". Sister. 7 September 2017 . Retrieved 29 May 2021.

I also really enjoyed the historical perspective of the little girl, growing up the way she did and what she chose to do with her life. a b c d e f g h i j Morris, Lauren (16 February 2022). "Meet the cast of BBC One's This Is Going to Hurt". Radio Times . Retrieved 5 March 2022. I’m still rounding up 3.5 stars to 4! I enjoyed Darling Rose Gold more but I still enjoyed it’s one creepy location and cult themes of the book. It’s hard not to fall under the spell of Wisewood, or Wrobel’s mesmerizing, edge-of-your-seat storytelling. A deep dive into psychological abuse and manipulation and their long-lasting emotional and mental tolls; will certainly leave a mark.” At the same time, we see scenes from their past as the girls are growing up with their parents --- a kind mother but an extremely difficult father who is referred to in these passages as “sir.” The girls’ names are not directly given, a fine subterfuge by Wrobel to play into the secrets that will be revealed in the last third of the book. The CEO leans forward, mouth slightly ajar as if a cigar is usually perched there. He oversees a household-name beer that's been losing market share to craft breweries for years. As sales have slipped, my new agency has found itself on thinner and thinner ice with this client. I stand at the head of the conference table. The chairs around me are filled with men: short, tall, fat, bald, polite, skeptical. I direct the close of my pitch to the CEO, who has spent fifty minutes of my sixty-minute presentation playing with his phone and the other ten frowning at me. He is past his prime, trying to disguise the fact with hair plugs and a bottled tan. There are several mysteries here. What did Natalie do to her sister? Why is Kit so messed up she needs this retreat? Whose history are we reading? And what exactly is going on at this retreat? One by one, it becomes obvious what the answers are. a b c d Kanter, Jake (24 June 2021). " 'This Is Going To Hurt': Harriet Walter, Alex Jennings Join BBC/AMC Series; First Look At Lead Ben Whishaw". Deadline Hollywood . Retrieved 24 June 2021.

This is so funny. This 20 year old student goes to the doctor to request an abortion following condom failure. Turns out that she and her boyfriend didn't have much money so they turned the just-used condom inside out for round two! He was performing at the theatre where I used to work. And I feel like I can write this now, I no longer work there so these words are not a reflection on the business but merely the words of a disgruntled former employee. So, Adam came on a busy Saturday night where we had sold all the seats. His name was popular, and people wanted to hear what he had to say. He and his manager approached me to tell me about their show, the visiting companies would inform the front of house manger about the show’s running times and give details about the content of the performance. This was all standard stuff.

For the second part of the novel, the narration switches from Natalie to Kit. We get to experience Kit’s arrival at Wisewood and the true cult-like teachings that are practiced there. Behind these lessons is a woman named Rebecca, who everyone refers to as Teacher. Kit takes an instant liking to her --- so much so that she signs on to work at Wisewood after her initial time as a voluntary patient is over. Well, after devouring “Darling Rose Gold” in one sit, I was so happy to add another brilliant author at my favorite women thriller writers who scare the living daylights out of me list. Stephanie Wrobel can surprise you with her mentally disturbed characters who can easily make your precious jaws drop with their extreme and impressively bad shit crazy actions! I could really relate to all of this, though overall I believe the NHS program was a tougher place to survive than my program at the Mayo Clinic. Adam Kay has my deepest respect.
