Description

In Norse Mythology Odin, the All-Father, found two tree trunks on the seashore and turned them into the first man and woman? The man was made from Ash, the very tree believed to also be the Yggdrasil or the World Ash Tree of Norse mythology. The man was named Ask (Askr) meaning “Ash”. The Norns, from Mary Foster’s 1901 book – Asgard Stories: Tales from Norse Mythology. Note the Ash tree behind the central figure, the leaves clearly visible. Ash & Royalty So why does this matter? The problem is that ash and oak often compete for resources. Whichever trees leaf first tends to win the battle for canopy space, and ash trees are increasingly losing out. This will have a significant impact on the biodiversity of our woodlands. Complex, thought-provoking and pertinent... A clever, partial book, written in a fluent, comfortable narrative style.’ Holly trees were often used as boundary trees planted in the hedgerows to prevent the passage of witches, who were known to fly along the tops of hedges.

Indeed the first hint I spotted of what year this might be was a slightly forced entry on 1 December in the 2nd year, where the great W.G. Sebald is introduces as my current favourite amongst living writers and his latest published book Austerlitz quoted, a passage where Jacques, like our narrator, proceeds to obsessively name butterflies. From my casual annual observations, Ash is even more of a sleepy head than Oak. Around the fringe of the woods, there’s wave after white wave of cow parsley, some of which has shot up to five feet tall in just a few short weeks. Herzog, the filmmaker, wrote in his Fitzcarraldo journal: “why do these animal dramas preoccupy me so? Because I do not want to look inside myself. Only this much: a sense of desolation was tearing me up inside, like termites in a fallen tree trunk.’ Ancient kings presented themselves as the personifications of these gods. They took on the responsibility not only for success in battle but also the fertility of the land, which relied on rainfall. They wore crowns of oak leaves, as a symbol of the god they represented as kings on Earth. Similarly, successful Roman commanders were presented with crowns of oak leaves during their victory parades. Oak leaves have continued as decorative icons of military prowess to the present day. Oak leaves’ connection with rainfall also survived in more recent folklore. There are a variety of similar rhymes about which tree’s leaves appeared first, such as the Irish saying:

Quite unlike any other novel published this year: a bold, radical, almost embarrassingly direct assault on modern complacencies, both political and artistic.’
